No. 9 UW-Whitewater Collects Two More WIAC Wins

The No. 9 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team totaled 26 hits and built early leads Monday in a pair of victories against UW-Stout in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.

 

The Warhawks (29-6 overall, 21-3 WIAC), who extended their active win streak to 14 games, maintained their two-game lead in the loss column in the conference standings with four regular season games to play.

 

UW-Whitewater took the opener 14-2 in seven innings before capping the day with a 12-4 triumph.

 

In Game 1, the Warhawks scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning and five more in the second to take command of the contest.

 

First baseman Nick Paget started the scoring with a sacrifice fly before second baseman Sam Vomhof scored on a wild pitch to double the UW-W lead. Left fielder Matt Scolan smashed a grand slam out to right center field to make it 6-0.

 

In the second, right fielder Jacob DeMeyer and centerfielder Zach Campbell posted back-to-back, RBI singles to increase the advantage to eight. Following a run-scoring groundout by third baseman Matt Korman, Scolan went deep again for a two-run homer, his third long ball of the year, for an 11-0 lead.

 

Campbell knocked a solo homer, his team-leading sixth of the year, in the fourth.

 

After the Blue Devils (15-19, 10-14) scored twice in the top of the sixth, UW-Whitewater responded with two of its own in the bottom half of the frame on a run-scoring base hit up the middle by Korman and an RBI groundout by catcher Ryan Norton.

 

Cam Anfang pitched all seven innings to improve to 4-0 on the season. He allowed two unearned runs on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts in the 92-pitch performance.

 

Campbell finished 4-for-4 at the plate with four runs scored and two RBIs. Scolan collected three hits, two runs scored and six RBIs and Korman registered two hits, one walk, one run scored and two RBIs. DeMeyer reached twice with one walk and one hit and added three runs scored and one RBI.

 

In Game 2, the Warhawks plated four runs in the bottom of the first and five more in the bottom of the fourth to break open a two-run game. They added one in the fifth and two in the eighth.

 

DeMeyer recorded three hits, two runs scored and five RBIs to pace the offense. Shortstop Dylan Rost finished with three hits, two runs scored and one RBI, Vomhof contributed two hits, one walk, three runs scored and one RBi and Paget generated two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs.

 

Designated hitter Sam Paden registered one hit, two walks and three runs scored.

 

Cade Berendt pitched the first five innings, totaling eight strikeouts as he improved to 6-0 on the year. Hayden Fox picked up his first save with four shutout innings in relief.

 

UW-Whitewater closes the regular season this weekend with a four-game set at UW-Platteville. First pitch of Friday's doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
