Waltham, MA ---In the team's final game of the 2022 season, the WPI baseball team ended things on a high note with a 5-4 victory over Brandeis University on Tuesday evening.

The Engineers (16-18) were paced by a 2-for-4 effort from Joe Salvon (Longmeadow, MA) who finished with two RBIs and a run scored in the outing.

After giving up a pair of runs in the first inning, starter Andrew Gray (Millersville, MD) locked down for the Engineers finishing with three runs allowed off of seven hits in six innings pitched. Ryan Malkowski (Hubbardston, MA) stepped into the game in relief pitching the seventh and eighth innings before Noah Pins (Holden, MA) closed it out for WPI to pick up his fourth save of the year.

Brandeis starter Marc Maestri (Kahtonah, NY) left the game after 1.2 innings of action before Sean Decker-Jacoby (Los Angeles, CA) locked down the Engineers for the next 5.1 innings of action. The Judges were led by a 3-for-4 effort from leadoff hitter Sam Nugent (Mansfield, MA) who scored two of Brandeis' four runs on the day.

The Engineers got the scoring going in the top of the first putting two runs on the board with a pair of two-out RBI singles to left field from Salvon and Martin McCormack (Quincy, MA). The Judges answered in the bottom half of the frame with a pair of runs of their own, utilizing a sacrifice fly and a single to left to even the score at two-all.

But WPI regained the lead in the second once again pouring on the two-out RBIs as Jacob Hand (Niskayuna, NY) roped a double to right field that brought home Frank D'Alessio (Morganville, NJ) and DJ Brooks (Danvers, MA) followed by a Salvon single to center that drove in Hand for a 5-2 lead.

It would take another couple innings before another run was scored as Brandeis got one back in the fourth when Victory Oppenheimer (West Hills, CA) used his speed to steal second and advance to third on an errant throw, scampering home on a wild pitch to make it 5-3.

Both pitching staffs locked down until the eighth inning where Brandeis was able to chip away a little more when Nugent tripled to right field, coming home on a ground out to shortstop by Mike Khoury (E. Bridgewater, MA).

But Pins stepped into the game in the ninth to hold Brandeis scoreless and help WPI come away with the season-ending victory.
