WINCHESTER, Va. -- Junior captain Jay Beavers (Alexandria) had a home run, and sophomore Tillman Butler (Culpeper) added two doubles, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 6-2 baseball decision on the road at nationally-ranked Shenandoah University on Sunday afternoon in Winchester. It was game one of the Best-of-Three Quarterfinal series in the 2022 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament. Junior Justin Woodall (Mechanicsville) took the mound setback for the visiting Tigers (20-18) against the host Hornets (30-10-1). Game two will be played on Monday, May 9, at 2 p.m. in Winchester, and game three—if necessary—will follow at approximately 5 p.m.

H-SC scored two runs on four hits with one error … scoring one run in the sixth inning and one run in the ninth. SU, No. 28 in this week's Collegiate Baseball/ABCA Division III Poll, scored six runs on 13 hits with no errors … scoring one run in the first inning, three runs in the sixth and two runs in the eighth.

In the sixth, Beavers (1-3, RBI) hit his first home run of the season, a solo blast with one out.

In the ninth, freshman Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) walked to begin the at-bat, advanced to third on a double by Butler (2-4), and scored when senior captain Trey Karnes (Mechanicsville) (RBI) grounded out to second base.

Senior Ethan Badin (Richmond) (1-4) had the other hit in the contest for the Tigers.

Woodall (1-4) started and pitched the first 6.0 innings, scattering 10 hits and four runs, all earned, with three strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Lance Tate (Stanardsville) tossed the final 2.0 innings, allowing three hits and two runs, both earned, with three strikeouts and no walks.
