Hood hits its way to an opening weekend sweep

At the Plate

  • Tyler Schwarzman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) led Hood at the plate over the two games, going 5-for-8 with three RBIs and scored four times. The junior also had three stolen bases.
  • Jacob Saylor (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) recorded four RBIs on a two-hit afternoon with a double in game one.
  • Matthew Stout (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) went 3-for-4 in two games, with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Alex Jenkins (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) hit two doubles, scored two times and had an RBI to finish the afternoon.

On the Mound

  • Declan Sullivan (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) started game one and struck out five in four innings. The first-year allowed one unearned run, on two hits to win his first game of his career. 
  • Colby Childs (Berryville, Va./Clarke County) and Aaron Heller (Philadelphia, Pa./Jack Barrack Hebrew Acad.) followed in relief. Childes allowed two runs on one hit while walking two. Heller shut down the Knights in the final two innings, allowing only one hit with one strikeout. 
  • Eric Seick (Mount Laurel, N.J./Camden Catholic) started game two for the Blazers, and lasted 0.1 of an inning, giving up two runs on three walks. 
  • Gavin Pollard (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) received the win for game two, in 1.2 innings in relief with two walks. 
  • Tyler Cooney (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst)Joe Alexander (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) and Scott Ash (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) finished the game out of the bullpen. Cooney struck out three in 2.2 innings of work, giving up only one hit. Alexander gave up one hit in 1.1 innings with two strikeouts. Ash finished the game in the seventh, setting down the Knights in order, with a strikeout to get the save. 

Hood 14, Central Pennslyvania 3

  • Keegan Brennan (Lake Wynonah, Pa./Nativity BVM) led off the first inning with a walk and later scored on a Schwarzman single to get Hood on the board 1-0 early. Schwarzman scored on a wild pitch later in the inning capping off a two-run inning for the Blazers.
  • Cristian Reyna (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) walked and scored off a Schwarzman single to take a 3-0 lead in the second inning.
  • With two outs in the second inning, Saylor hit a bases-loaded double down the left-field line to push the Blazers out to a 6-0 lead. 
  • Reyna doubled with one out in the third inning, and later scored on a Brennan single, to push the lead to 7-0. Brennan then scored on a double steal, as the sophomore took off to the plate when Schwarzman stole second for an 8-0 lead. 
  • Schwarzman scored on a passed ball later in the inning that followed a Jenkins walk, Stephen Sommer (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun) then knocked in Jenkins on a single up the middle for a 10-0 lead. Jack Patterson (Boyds, Md./Northwest), two batters later, drove in Sommer on a single into right field to extend the Blazer lead to 11-0 all in the third inning. 
  • Central Pennsylvania College got on the board in the fourth inning, on an Orlian Roman sacrifice fly that brought in Nathan Wise with Hood still leading 11-1.
  • The Knights had back-to-back walks by Zavier Hernandez and Owen Zell to start the fifth inning. Adam Hoover singled to score Hernandez, Jefrandy Montero pinch ran for Hoover and scored later in the inning via two straight errors by the Blazers still down 11-3.    

Hood 5, Central Pennslyvania 2

  • The Blazers struggled early in the first inning, as five walks and an error gave  Central Pennsylvania an early 2-0 lead. 
  • Sommer reached on an error to start the second inning and reached second base. Stout the next at-bat singled to left field to bring in Sommer and advanced to second on the throw home. Saylor then had a single of his own up the middle to send Stout home as the Blazers tied the game up at 2-2. 
  • With two outs in the second inning, Cameron Day (Hagerstown, Md./Clear Spring) brought in Saylor to give Hood its first lead of the game 3-2. 
  • Hood got some insurance runs in the fourth inning, from a Schwarzman infield single that scored Brennan, who doubled earlier in the inning. Both runners scored on a Jenkins double down the right-field line to give the Blazers a 5-2 lead. 

For the Opponent 

  • Colby Criswell, Stevens, Roman, and Hoover all recorded an RBI in the doubleheader.
  • Zach Boyer had four walks in two games. 
  • Alex Lilja started game one for the Knights, allowing five runs on three hits in 1.2 innings. He had two strikeouts and five walks, taking the loss. Zachary Haefner and Harvey McClain III both threw two complete innings, giving up eight runs on seven hits. Both pitchers combined for five walks and five strikeouts in relief. 
  • Dalton Koller got the start in game two, giving up five runs on nine hits in four innings. He took the loss, striking out two. 
  • Colton Zerby threw two scoreless innings, giving up one hit and striking out two.  

Notes

  • Hood starts the 2023 season 2-0.  
  • Central Pennsylvania begins the season 0-2.
