Mustangs score 16 in second half of doubleheader spilt with Ursinus

Owings Mills, Md - The Stevenson University baseball team splits the home opening doubleheader with Ursinus. The games marked the first contests on the new Owings Mills East campus baseball field. 

The first game featured back-and-forth action with the Bears scoring three runs in the seventh to seal the win 10-8. The Mustangs allowed only a single hit in the final frame to grab their first win of the 2023 season, 16-2. Stevenson now holds a 1-3 record, matching Ursinus.

Game One

The Mustangs wasted no time getting on the board as junior Amoni Jones doubled, and junior Nick Tamberino singled up the middle to drive him home. Trevor Smoot walked sending Tambernio to second who was then driven home by a senior Elliott Schilpp single to right field. 

Ursinus struck the next inning as Balos homered to right field. 

In the bottom of the third, after Jones and Smoot singles, Schilpp doubled to left field driving in the two baserunners. 

Balos hit his second home run in the sixth, giving the Bears their first lead of the game 5-4. 

With graduate student Trent Smoot on third, Jones slapped a ball to left center scoring one, followed by Tamberino hitting a single to center field scoring Jones and graduate student Jonathan Brandt, regaining the lead for the Mustangs. 

Kelley tripled in the seventh, driving in three runs which put the game out of reach for the Mustangs. 

Game Two

Graduate student Billy McAdam scored after walking, stealing second, then finally was driven in by a Trevor Smoot single in the first inning. His brother Trent Smoot, hit a grand slam to put the Mustangs up 5-0. 

A pair of walks and a Mustangs error loaded the bases in the top of the second for the Bears and Dylan Runsdorf grounded out which scored a run. 

Stevenson starting pitcher Sam Downs struck out three in the third after Will Kelley reached on an error. Downs threw five hitless innings, striking out a career-high 10 batters.

Trevor Smoot, McAdam, and Jones all tally doubles in the stretching the Mustangs lead, 15-1. 

The Bears notched one run in the ninth, but the senior Patrick O'Farrell struck out Shane Beaver to lock down Stevenson's first win of the 2023 season.
