Hood bats wake up in game two in split with Franciscan

On the Mound

  • Declan Sullivan started game one for the Blazers, allowing only three hits in four shutout innings.

  • Colby Childs gave up one hit in a scoreless fifth inning. Mason Sawyers threw 1.1 innings, but was responsible for the only run to score in the seventh inning, taking the loss. Aaron Heller limited the damage, recording the last two outs in the seventh inning. 

  • Tyler Cooney got the start in game two, giving up two runs on three hits and walking two. 

  • Gavin Pollard had three strikeouts in two innings of work, allowing a hit and a walk.

  • Joe Alexander received the win for the Blazers in three innings of relief. The senior had five strikeouts, giving up only one earned run. 

  • Scott Ash shut the door in the seventh inning striking out two of the three batters faced. 

At the Plate 

  • Keegan Brennan led the Blazers at the plate, going 3-for-6 on the day with a double, two RBIs and scoring once. 

  • Alex Jenkins ended the afternoon with an RBI double, a run scored and a walk all in game two. 

  • Tyler Schwarzman had two sacrifice flies in game two.       

  • Joe Monteleone went 2-for-3 in game two, scoring two times.

Franciscan 1, Hood 0

  • Sullivan used his defense behind him to allow no runs in the first four innings, getting out of two potential scoring opportunities for the Barons. With the bases loaded in the fourth inning and one out, Sullivan struck out Jeremy Sagun for the second out. Samuel Tyler then grounded out to second base to get the Blazers out of the jam to keep the score knotted at 0-0. Although Hood's offense was not able to produce any support for Sullivan in his outing. 

  • The Barons broke through in the seventh inning, which started with a Peter Falconite base hit to start the inning. The next batter Anthony Franzonello was hit by a pitch, to put runners on first and second with no outs. Tyler moved both runners over into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. After a pitching change from the Blazers, David Ferroni brought in the go-ahead and ultimate winning run of the game on a sacrifice fly to center field. 

  • The Blazers managed to get a runner on third base in the home seventh but could not cash in. 

  • Jacob Watson threw a complete game shut-out for the Barons with only two strikeouts.      

Hood 9, Franciscan 3

  • Franciscan took an early lead, benefiting from two first-inning walks and a single to take an early 2-0 lead. 

  • Austin Rhue led off the third inning with a walk, stole second base and crossed home plate on a Brennan double to cut the deficit to 2-1. Brennan reached third on the play by way of a throwing error by Fransican's Kyle Ferrance in left field. Brennan later scored on Schwarzman's sacrifice fly to left field to tie the game up at 2-2.   

  • The Blazers retired 9-of-12 batters in innings two through four in a joint effort from Pollard and Alexander to keep the Barons off the scoreboard. 

  • The first three batters for the Blazers reached base to start the bottom of the fourth. Sebastian Paz brought in Monteleone on a sacrifice fly out to right field to give Hood its first lead of the day 3-2. Rhue executed a perfect squeeze bunt that scored Jack Patterson to extend Hood's lead 4-2. Brennan came through again with a single through the left side to cash in Cristian Reynaas the Blazers jumped out to a 5-2 lead. 

  • Hood added two insurance runs in the fifth inning. Patterson singled to bring home Jenkins, and Monteleone scored on a passed ball extending the Blazer lead to 7-2. 

  • The Barons' final run of the game was scored on a Watson double to deep right field. Ferrance, who walked earlier in the inning, scored to make it a 7-3 deficit. 

  • Back-to-back sacrifice flies by Schwarzman and Jenkins added two more runs in the sixth inning for a 9-3 lead for the Blazers. 

  • Ash struck out two of the final three batters in the seventh to secure the game-two win for the Blazers. 

 

For the Opponent 

  • Watson was the bright spot on the mound for Franciscan in game one recording a complete game shutout. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate in game two with two doubles and an RBI. 

  • Ferrance went 3-for-3 in game one and scored the only run of the game. 

  • Brendan Burke had two hits in game two with a run scored. 

Notes

  • Hood moved to 3-1 on the year.  

  • It was opening day for Franciscan, who ended the day 1-1.
