W&J edges Pitt-Greensburg in non-conference tilt

More news about: Washington and Jefferson

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team used a RBI single by catcher Sam Schuster (Fairport Harbor, Ohio/Fairport Harding) in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure a 3-2 victory over the Pitt-Greensburg Bobcats Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game at Ross Memorial Park.

The box score filled up quickly for both units as the Bobcats tallied two runs in the top of the first inning. UPG started the game with a leadoff single followed by a RBI triple and a RBI groundout to take the early advantage.

Tyler Horvat (Irwin, Pa. / Penn-Trafford) led off the bottom of the frame with a double and eventually scored on a sac fly by Luke Virag (New Kensington, Pa./Burrell) to cut the deficit to 2-1 after one inning. Horvat producted a RBI groundout to score Logan Scheider (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) and tie the score at 2-2 after two innings of play.

Scoring for both offenses would soon go cold for both sides after plenty of missed opportunities around the diamond. Neither team was able to score over the next five innings as the game entered the latter stages knotted at 2-2.

W&J would finally break the ice when Schuster singled home Joe Lehner (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) in the bottom of the eighth. W&J made sure to finish the job as Ethan Boring (Ligonier, Pa. / Ligonier Valley) retired the side in order in the ninth inning for his first collegiate save.

Ryan Rametta (Leechburg, Pa. / Kiski Area) earned his first win of the season after posting a scoreless eighth inning. The W&J bullpen worked five scoreless innings of relief.

Jacob LaDuca (Clarence, N.Y. / Canisius) added two hits to his 2023 totals in a 2-for-4 night for the sophomore while Horvat, Schuster, and Connor Helm (Murrysville, Pa. / Franklin Regional) all added a base knock.

The Presidents have a quick turnaround as they look to the La Roche Redhawks for a non-conference game on Wednesday, Mar. 1. First pitch for the single nine-inning contest is scheduled for 4 p.m.
