Matt Reich Throws Seven Scoreless in 7-0 Victory Over Widener

Chester, Pa. – The Stevenson University baseball team shut out Widener University 7-0 to open MAC Commonwealth play on Friday afternoon.

Mustang pitcher Matt Reich pitched seven scoreless innings, striking out nine batters, and allowed only five hits improving his record to 2-1. With the win, Stevenson improves their overall record to 5-4 (1-0 MACC). 

With Amani Jones on second and two outs on the board, Nick Tamberino also doubled to score Jones giving the Mustangs the lead at the top of the third. Trevor Smoot singled which scored Tambernio to extend the lead. 

The Mustangs threatened by loading the bases at the top of the fifth inning as the Pride intentionally walked Trevor Smoot. Widener starting pitcher Sean Curran struck out Elliott Schilpp for the third out. 

Stevenson drove in more insurance as Dylan Scott doubled to drive home Trent Smoot and Tommy Holcomb who both walked. Jonathan Brandt doubled to score Scoot, followed by Jones, who cracked his second double to score Brandt. Trevor Smoot slapped a single to the outfield scoring Jones and increasing the Mustang's advantage 7-0.

Jason Labrador and Matt Kossey came out of the bullpen to pitch the final two innings to lock down the Mustang's first conference win of the season.

The home and home series continues Sunday, Mar. 12 as the Mustangs host the Pride for a doubleheader at 12 p.m. at the Owings Mills East baseball field.
