FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College's Tyler Schwarzman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) singled through a drawn in infield in the bottom of the seventh as the Blazers came from behind for a 4-3 win in the second game of a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth baseball doubleheader against Albright. Hood won the first game 6-1 for a season sweep of the Lions.
At the Plate
- Schwarzman and Richard Kershow (Eatons Neck, N.Y./Northport) each went 2-for-4 in both games.
- Cristian Reyna (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) tripled home the tying run in game two and scored the winning run.
- Alex Jenkins (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) doubled the opener.
- Matthew Stout (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) drove in runs in both games.
On the Mound
- Joe Alexander (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) held Albright to just two hits over five shutout innings in game one, improving to 3-0. He struck out seven and walked one.
- Kevin Nelson, Jr. (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) pitched a scoreless seventh after Scott Ash (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) allowed a run in the sixth.
- Hood used five pitchers in the second game. Tyler Cooney (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) allowed a hit and two walks in three innings. Colby Childs (Berryville, Va./Clarke County), Mason Sawyers (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) and Finn Scott-Daniels (Annandale, Va./Annandale) combined to pitch the fourth fifth and sixth. Aaron Heller (Philadelphia, Pa./Jack Barrack Hebrew Acad.) tossed a scoreless seventh and picked up his first career win.
Hood 6, Albright 1
- Hood scored twice in the first to take the lead. After Schwarzman and Kershow both singled and stole bases, Stout picked up an RBI groundout. Cameron Day (Hagerstown, Md./Clear Spring) knocked in Kershow with a single right field for a 2-0 lead.
- Jenkins led off with a double during a three-run fourth inning. Reyna drove him in with a base hit, stole second and scored on a Jack Patterson (Boyds, Md./Northwest) single. Patterson made it 5-0 when he scored on an error.
- Tommy Lewman doubled and scored to get Albright on the board in the sixth, but Hood got the run back in the bottom of the inning on a run-scoring single by Stout that scored Schwarzman.
Hood 4, Albright 3
- The Blazers trailed 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh in game two. Jenkins led off with a single and scored on Reyna's one-out triple to tie the game. Patterson and Austin Rhue (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) were intentionally walked to load the bases, setting up a force at any base. With the infield draw in and two strikes, Schwarzman hit a line drive through the middle to drive in Reyna for the win.
- Hood had scored in the first inning when Kershow doubled and came home on a single by Day to make it 1-0.
- Albright took the lead with a two-run fourth. Jack Gilmer and John O'Connor singled with two outs and Eddie Meredith was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Nick Barton tied the game with a single to center before Hood failed to retire a runner on a grounder to third, allowing Meredith to score from second for a 2-1 Lion lead.
- O'Connor scored again in the sixth to make it 3-1. He singled and came all the way around the bases via two wild pitches and a passed ball.
- The Blazers got the run back in the bottom of the inning. Schwarzman led off with a bunt single and scored on a one-out, RBI groundout by Stout to pull Hood within 3-2.
For the Opponent
- O'Connor reached base three times in game two via two hits and a walk.
- Lucas Williams took the loss in game one. He surrendered five runs on eight hits and a walk over five innings.
- Hayden Paukstis took the complete game loss in game two. He allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks in 6.1 innings.
Notes
- Hood extended its win streak to four and improved to 9-3. The Blazers are 3-0 in the conference. It's the best start to a season since Hood won 13 straight to begin the 2018 season.
- Albright dropped to 0-8 and 0-3.
