Mustangs Baseball Split Doubleheader With Widener

Owings Mills, Md. – The Stevenson University baseball team split a home doubleheader with Widener University on Sunday afternoon. 

Widener tacked on three runs in early in game one, adding another pair of runs in the sixth to take game one. The Mustangs responded early scoring five runs in the first two innings while the pitchers locked it down to take control of game two. The Mustangs move to 6-5 overall with a 2-1 MACC record. The Pride moves to a record of 3-8 (1-2 MACC).

Game One

Justin Contanzo homered over the centerfield fence on the first at-bat of the game against starting Mustang pitcher Sam Downs. A double and a single from the Pride added two more runs to take an early advantage.

Stevenson got on the board as Elliott Schilpp doubled and was driven in by a Dylan Scott single through the left side. Then again in the fourth, this time with a Tommy Holcomb double being driven in again by Scott. 

The Pride scored two more runs thanks to Andrew Yates who drove in Jon Aman who was pinch running. Ian Kauffman grounded out to the pitcher scoring Nick Barenz who reached on a Mustang error making the score 5-2.

The Mustangs threatened again and scored another run by Graham Sears who was pitch running, driven home by Schilpp. 

The Mustangs dropped game one 5-3, Downs was dealt his first loss of the season striking out seven batters and giving up three earned runs. 

Game Two

Widener struck first in game two, scoring an early run off a Yates single. Stevenson answered by Nick Tamberinosending a sacrifice fly out to center field allowing Billy McAdam to score who reached on an error. 

The Mustangs added four runs in the second inning. With Holcomb and John Padousis on base, Dylan Scottreached on a fielder's choice and Holcomb scored thanks to the pitcher making a throwing error. McAdam then doubled to right field sending Scott and Padousis home. After being walked, Tamberino stole second base allowing McAdam to score on the throw. 

Schilpp added some insurance by sending a single out to left center scoring Tamberino. 

Out of the bullpen, replacing starter Brady Power in the fifth inning, Jason Labrador struck out the side all swinging and missing. Power earned his first win of the season throwing 4.0 innings, striking out five, and allowing a lone earned run. 

Jonathan Brandt sealed the game for the Mustangs singling up the middle to score Scott making the game 7-1.

The Mustangs next head north to Wilkes University to take on the Colonels at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 14. Wilkes is 5-6 overall and most recently lost to DeSales 7-4 on Sunday afternoon.
