BREVARD, N.C. – Cortland scored 21 runs over the final three innings, including a 13-run top of the seventh, and the Red Dragons defeated host Brevard College, 23-3, in a non-league baseball matchup.

Cortland trailed 3-2 entering the top of the seventh. The Red Dragons tied the game on Hunter Holliday's (Camden) pinch-hit RBI single, but the rally seemed to fizzle out when Cortland lined into a double play with runners on second and third. However, Cortland proceeded to score 12 more runs in the inning and sent a total of 19 batters to the plate during the frame. The Red Dragons finished with 10 hits in the inning and took a 15-3 lead, and Cortland added three in the eighth and five in the ninth.

Cortland led 1-0 in the first on an error, but the host Tornados scored two in the first on RBI singles by Cale Oehler and Lucas Granata and added a run in the fourth on a wild pitch. The Red Dragons got a run back in the sixth on a Dylan Mackenzie (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) RBI single.

Cortland finished with 23 hits. Chris Bonacci (Syracuse/West Genesee) went 5-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBI, Holliday was 2-for-3 with a walk, four runs and two RBI, and Mackenzie finished 2-for-4 with a double, walk and four RBI. Jon Munoz (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) finished 2-for-2 with a double and three RBI, Luke Schartner (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI and Liam Ward (Albion) went 2-for-2 with a double, RBI and two runs.

Mat Bruno (Rye) finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI and Nick Chemotti (Warners/West Genesee) went 2-for-4 with a double, walk, RBI and two runs. Adam Mieczkowski (Vestal) ended 2-for-5 with a triple, two RBI and two runs. Both of Mieczkowski's hits came in the seventh inning, and he had a rare opportunity for a three-hit inning but flied out to center to end the frame.

Cortland starter Will McCarthy (Farmingdale) earned the win with six innings of seven-hit ball. He allowed three runs, two earned, with seven strikeouts and two walks. Bradley Battaglini (West Islip), Shane Van Dam (Cranford, NJ) and Grant Biederman (Huntington Station/Walt Whitman) each tossed a scoreless inning of relief.

For Brevard (10-6), Luke Morton finished 2-for-3 with a double, Oehler was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Granata went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Jacob Thompson pitched six-plus innings and gave up four runs, two earned, on eight hits. He fanned five and walked one and took the loss.

Cortland is scheduled to host Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) in a doubleheader on Sunday, but that twinbill will possibly be moved to another location due to the recent snowfall in Cortland.
