No. 4 BW Baseball Uses Late Game Surge to Pull Past Case Western

BEREA, Ohio – The No. 4 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team used a late inning offensive surge to pull past crosstown rival Case Western Reserve University by a final score of 15-6 on the Fisher Field.

BW (12-2) was led by senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School) who went 4-5 hitting two home runs scoring four runs and adding four runs batted in (RBI). Senior Academic All-OAC utility Ryan Guggenheim (Solon) went 2-5 with a three-run homer scoring two runs and driving in five RBIs.

Scoring Plays

  • Case Western (7-5) got on the board first in the second with a run scoring on a walk.
  • In the third, an RBI single from senior outfielder Kevin Mackenzie extended the Spartans lead to 2-0.
  • In the fourth, Case doubled their lead with a two-run homer from senior infielder Nick Talarico.
  • The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the fifth with a solo homer from Castillo.
  • The Spartans responded in the sixth with an RBI from freshman utility Matt Trout on a sacrifice fly and Talarico's second home run of the game as they took 6-1 lead.
  • BW got on the board in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single from Castillo.
  • A two-run double from Guggenheim cut the Case lead to 6-4.
  • Sophomore catcher JT Mazula (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) tied things up at 6-6 with a two-run double.
  • The Yellow Jackets got the lead in the seventh with an RBI single from junior infielder Nick Clark (Willowick/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin).
  • Guggenheim hit a three-run homer to left field as BW took a 10-6 advantage.
  • The Yellow Jackets' offense kept the hot bats going with sophomore infielder Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) getting an RBI off a sacrifice fly.
  • Sophomore infielder Noah English (Perrysburg) scored on an error by the catcher.
  • Senior All-American infielder Luke Vonderhaar (New Breman) extended the BW lead to 13-6 with an RBI double.
  • Castillo finished things off with his second home run of the game to deep right field to give the Yellow Jackets a 15-6 advantage.

On the Mound

  • Senior All-OAC right-handed pitcher Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind.) picked up the start and went four innings allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits and striking out three batters.
  • Freshman right-handed pitcher Tyler Walker (Fairlawn/Copley) picked up the win after going three innings in relief allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits while striking out a pair.
  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Dylan Snyder (Stow/Archbishop Hoban) did not record an out and walked two batters.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Garrett Miller (McMurray, Pa.) picked up his first save of the season after going two innings and allowing a hit.
