Jones' Home Run Helps Mustangs Past Wilkes 7-5

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. – The Stevenson baseball team defeated Wilkes University 7-5 on Tuesday afternoon after the game was postponed a week.

Thanks to a five-run sixth inning, the Mustangs improve to a 9-6 (4-2 MAC) record. Wilkes falls to 7-10 overall and is now on a four-game losing streak. 

With the bases loaded in the third for the Mustangs, Nick Tamberino was hit by a pitch advancing Dylan Scott home. Jonathan Brandt scored on a wild pitch on the next at-bat, increasing the Stevenson lead to 2-0. 

In the next inning, the Colonials tied the game with a double and a single, driving in a run each. 

Jason Labrador entered the contest for starter Jake Pigeon with two outs in the fifth inning. Labrador earned his first win of the season striking out three in 1.2 innings of work.

Noah Joly walked, and Scott was hit by a pitch kicking off the sixth inning. With the runners on, Amani Jones cracked a home run over the right-field fence, his first homer of the season. Tamberino and Alex Russo got on base and were driven home by Brandon Perillo singling up the middle. 

The Colonels threatened the Stevenson advantage scoring two runs in the eighth. Dylan Young gave up another run in the ninth inning but held on to earn this first save of the season. 

Out-of-conference play will continue for the Mustangs on Thursday as they travel to Gettysburg to take on the Bullets at 3:30 p.m. Wilkes will host Susquehanna University on Wednesday, March 22, at 3:30 p.m.
