WAYNE, N.J. – Graduate student Carson Weis blasted a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to send the William Paterson baseball team (9-5) past Keystone (6-7), 6-5, Thursday afternoon at Jeff Albies Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Giants opened the fourth inning with back-to-back singles through the left side. The leadoff batter came around to score after stealing third and later crossing home on a one-out fielder's choice to give Keystone the 1-0 edge.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, freshman Will Pitt belted a double down the left field line to leadoff the frame for the Pioneers. After a fly out to right by classmate Mike Novak advanced Pitt to third, the Bloomingburg, N.Y., native came in to score on a ground rule double to center by graduate student Colin Lombardo.
  • The score did not remain even for long as Keystone retook the lead in the top of the sixth with one run off an RBI double. However, the Pioneers countered in the bottom of the inning. Graduate student Carson Weis reached safely on a fielder's choice and crossed home after junior Jake Lutz launched a ball off the fence in center for an RBI two-bagger to knot the game up at 2-2.
  • In the seventh, the Giants got two runners on with two outs. The runner at second advanced to third on a passed ball and then scored on a balk to put Keystone ahead, 3-2.
  • Despite Keystone tacking on an insurance run in the eighth, the Pioneers came up to bat and plated three runs in the bottom half of the frame. William Paterson loaded the bases on back-to-back singles by graduate student Dan Carter and Weis before Lutz drew a base on balls. Sophomore Tyler Ruban then walked with the bases loaded before Pit hit a sacrifice fly to right to even the score at 4-4.
  • The Pioneers were not finished and grabbed a 5-4 lead after junior Noah Cabassa recorded a pinch-hit RBI single.
  • Keystone tied the game in the top of the ninth on a leadoff home run. However, with one out in the bottom of the ninth, Weis worked a favorable 2-0 count and blasted a ball over the fence in left field to secure the 6-5 walk-off victory for the Pioneers.
