Wolves Close Spring Trip Against Johns Hopkins

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The Keuka College Baseball team lost to Johns Hopkins University 7-3 on Saturday morning to conclude their 2023 spring training trip to Florida.

Four players posted multi-hit games for Keuka College (2-7, 0-0 Empire 8). Matt Vaccaro (Fayetteville, N.Y. / Fayetteville-Manlius) led the way with two hits and two runs batted in. The junior also hit his first career home run. Also with two hits in the game were Devyn Scheidt (Brockport, N.Y. / Brockport), Donald Nemeth (Guilderland, N.Y. / Guilderland), and Derek Novicki (North Haven, Conn. / North Haven).

The Blue Jays plated a pair in the bottom of the second to take the lead on Saturday morning. Keuka College attempted to respond with back-to-back singles by Tyler Lewandowski (Milltown, N.J. /  Spotswood) and Devyn Scheidt but was unable to convert them into runs.

Single runs by Johns Hopkins in the third and fourth extended their lead. The Green and Gold got on the board in the fifth. Devyn Scheidt singled for the Wolves, then Matt Vaccaro hit a home run to right to cut the lead in half. Keuka continued to press with two-out hits by Nemeth and Novicki, but the inning would end without them scoring and Hopkins remained ahead 4-2.

Runs in the sixth and seventh reestablished the four-run lead for Johns Hopkins. Keuka had leadoff singles by Nemeth and Novicki in the eighth. They would get one run on a sacrifice by Shane Daley (Elma, N.Y. / Iroquois). The Blue Jays matched the run in the bottom of the inning and continued onto the 7-3 victory.

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves will return to New York and enter Empire 8 play. The Green and Gold will travel to St. John Fisher College to face the Cardinals next weekend. The three-game series opens with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 1, and concludes with a single game the next day.
