Home Runs From Wilson and Brouillette Lead Knights to 6-1 Win Over Hobart

Geneva, NY – Seniors Kent Wilson and Colby Brouillette each homered as the Clarkson University Baseball team opened up the Liberty League slate with a 6-1 victory over Hobart College on Friday afternoon at McDonough Field.

The Golden Knights moved to 2-8 on the year while Hobart fell to 2-7. The two teams are scheduled for a doubleheader on Saturday, with the first pitch of game one set for 1:00 pm at Falcon Park in Auburn, NY.

Clarkson put up four runs in the top half of the first inning and led throughout Friday's contest. Caleb Doyle singled and stole second to start things off, and remained at second when Brouillette reached on a hit by pitch with two outs. Cam Jerrett followed with a ball hit to the third baseman, and it appeared as if the Statesmen would escape the frame unscathed, but a throw to second missed its target and a bobble in the outfield allowed both Doyle and Brouillette to score while Jerrett advanced all the way to third base. Kent Wilson then homered to right-center to put Clarkson up 4-0 early.

Derrick Lewis kept Hobart off the board for his first three innings, but ran into trouble in the fourth when he loaded the bases with three walks and a hit by pitch, though he did eliminate one of the runners by picking them off at second base. Tommy DiFranco came in and allowed a hit to right to score a run, but Jake Millich, Jerrett, and Robert Whalen combined to cut a second run down at the plate for out number two in the inning. An infield groundout ended the threat and Clarkson led 4-1 after four innings.

The Knights got the run back in the top of the fifth on a two-out solo home run from Brouillette, the long blast clearing the scoreboard in right field. Clarkson would pick up another run in the eighth when Wilson led off the frame with a triple and then scored on a wild pitch.

Doyle finished the game 2-for-4 with two stolen bases. Brouillette was 1-for-2 with a pair of runs scored, and Wilson was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two runs batted in, and seven total bases. DiFranco picked up the win by allowing just a single hit and one walk in 5.2 innings of relief. He and Lewis combined to give up just one hit in the contest. Alex Marancik took the loss for the Statesmen, allowing six hits and three walks but striking out six in seven innings of work.
