Hampden-Sydney Drops Doubleheader At Roanoke 3-0, 6-3

SALEM, Va. -- Sophomore Christian Chambers (Midlothian) had three hits, including a home run, and two RBIs, while sophomore Grayson Harris (Moseley) had three hits, as well, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader on the road at Roanoke College on Saturday in Salem. Senior Owen Tappy (Charlotte, NC) took the pitching setback in the 3-0 opener, while classmate Justin Woodall (Mechanicsville) took the mound loss in the 6-3 nightcap for the visiting Tigers (10-11, 4-3) against the host Maroons (13-8, 6-1).

In game one, H-SC had 10 hits with one error, while RC scored three runs on 10 hits with no errors … scoring two runs in the fourth inning and one run in the eighth.

Chambers (2-4), Harris (2-5) and sophomore Christian Lancaster (Danville) (2-3) each collected two hits for the Tigers.

Tappy (2-1) started on the mound and pitched the first 6.0 innings, scattering seven hits and two runs, both earned, with four strikeouts and one walk. Junior Ryan Portes (Midlothian) tossed the final 2.0 innings, yielding three hits and one run, earned, with no strikeouts and no walks.

In game two, H-SC scored three runs on seven hits with two errors … scoring two runs in the fourth inning and one run in the fifth. RC scored six runs on nine hits with one error … scoring four runs in the third inning and two runs in the eighth.

In the fourth, sophomore Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (2-4, RBI) opened the at-bat with a single to center field and scored ahead of Chambers (1-4, 2 RBIs), who slammed his third homer of the season with one out—a two-run shot to (the opposite) left center field to make it a 4-2 contest.

In the fifth, senior captain Jay Beavers (Alexandria) (1-4) doubled to left field to begin the frame, and scored on a two-out RBI single through the right side by Masterson to bring the Tigers within one run at 4-3.

Woodall (2-2) started on the mound and pitched the first 3.2 innings, allowing three hits and four runs, all earned, with one strikeout and three walks. Sophomore Gavin Gregory (Suffolk) followed with the final 4.1 innings, yielding six hits and two runs, both earned, with three strikeouts and no walks.

H-SC will play on the road at ODAC opponent and nationally-ranked No. 12 the University of Lynchburg on Tuesday, March 28, at 3 p.m. in Lynchburg.
