Baseball Defeats Hood 18-0 to Win Season Series

ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley baseball team defeated visiting Hood College 18-0 in the first game of a conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at McGill Field to win the season series. The Blazers came back and won the second game 4-3.

Game 1

LVC (9-9-1, 5-0 MAC Commonwealth) began the scoring in the first inning as Shane Stossel blasted a double to center to score Nico Santoro and Jace Fetterman. Three batters later, Dave Mangold hit a three-run home run to center to increase the lead to 5-0. The Dutchmen added to the lead with three more runs in the second. Duncan Weir tripled to center and then scored on a failed pickoff attempt. Conor Smith knocked in Fetterman with a single to center and then Logan Brewer scored on an Andrew Miles infield single to short with two outs. 

Weir doubled home Ryan Murphy for the first run of the third inning. He then scored on a Fetterman single to right. Stossel knocked in Santoro with a single to right and then Miles knocked in Fetterman with a groundout to second. The Dutchmen increased the lead to 13-0 in the fourth as Eric Sees hit a pinch-hit single to left to score Murphy. Jared Copeland led off the fifth with a pinch-hit homer to left and then Anthony Gianatrino knocked into two more runs with a double to right. He scored on an Owen Berry single to left making it 17-0. LVC scored their final run in the sixth as Brian Hammond beat out an infield single to third base with two outs and the bases loaded.

Inside the Box Score

  • LVC scored a season-high 18 runs on 17 hits. 14 different Dutchmen had at least one hit.
  • Stossel pitched six innings and allowed just one hit and two walks with nine strikeouts to improve to 3-1 on the season. He also had two hits and three RBIs at the plate.
  • Weir had a triple and a double with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Copeland also had two hits including his first career home run.
  • Mangold knocked in three runs while Fetterman scored three times.
  • The Dutchmen hit four doubles, a triple, and two home runs in the game.
  • Jeremy Tuz pitched a perfect seventh inning with one strikeout. 

Game 2

Mangold gave the Dutchmen (9-10-1, 5-1 MAC Commonwealth) the lead in the second inning of game two with a double to right field to score Miles. Hood (11-8, 4-2 MAC Commonwealth) tied the game up in the third on a walk and triple to center. The score remained tied until the sixth when the Blazers scored three runs on two hits. The Dutchmen put together a two-out rally in the seventh. Santoro reached on a fielding error and then Brewer blasted his fourth home run of the year to right to cut the lead to 4-3. Fetterman walked and then Stoseel singled to left to put runners on the corner. The Blazers were able to get a flyball to left to end the game.

Inside the Box Score

  • Brewer had one of five Dutchmen hits in the game and knocked in two runs.
  • Mangold had an RBI double while Smith and Stossel had a hit each.
  • Andrew Spaan struck out five and allowed three earned runs on four hits in five innings of work.
  • Malachi Duka struck out one while facing five batters and getting four outs.
  • Jacob Detwiler struck out one and recorded the final two outs.
