Cortland Overcomes Early Deficits in Sweep of New Paltz

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland rallied from early 2-0 deficits in both games and the Red Dragons swept visiting New Paltz, 9-7 and 5-2, in a SUNYAC baseball doubleheader at Wallace Field. 
 
Cortland extended its winning streak to nine games and is now 14-7 overall and 5-0 in the SUNYAC. New Paltz dropped to 6-11 overall and 0-5 in the conference. 
 
The teams will finish their three-game series on Sunday in Cortland - the start time for that game has tentatively been moved to 1 p.m. 
 
Cortland 9, New Paltz
 
Cortland trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the second but scored the game's next nine runs, including four in the eighth, to take a 9-2 lead. New Paltz, however, scored five times in the ninth and had the potential game-tying run at the plate before Cortland reliever Tommy Lynch (West Seneca/Canisius) entered and got a strikeout and a flyout to earn the save. 
 
Chris Bonacci (Syracuse/West Genesee) went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a triple, a walk, a hit by pitch and two RBI and Nick Chemotti (Warners/West Genesee) finished 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI for the Red Dragons. Mat Bruno (Rye) was 2-for-5 with a double and Matthew Krafft (Cornwall) went 1-for-3 with a double, hit by pitch and two runs scored. 
 
Cortland starter Dylan Beers (Woodbury/Monroe-Woodbury) improved to 3-1 after allowing two runs on seven hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked one. Lynch was the third Cortland reliever and notched his second save of the spring. 
 
New Paltz held a 12-11 advantage in hits, led by Matt Sarni who went 2-for-3 with a hit by pitch, RBI and two runs. Fabian Apicella was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Dillon Ristano finished 2-for-4 with a walk and RBI. Billy Moeller started for the Hawks and gave up four runs, three earned, on seven hits in four innings. He fanned three and walked one. Liam Ryan entered in the fifth and gave up five runs, four earned, on four hits in four frames with three strikeouts and two walks. 
 
New Paltz took a 1-0 lead on a Ristano RBI single in the first but had a runner thrown out trying to score from second by left fielder Bruno after a Christopher Sais single. Sarni's sac fly in the second extended the Hawks' lead to 2-0. 
 
Cortland tied the game in the bottom of the second on a two-out, two-run single by Chemotti, and the Red Dragons scored twice in the fourth on a Bruno double, an error that allowed a run, a Bonacci double and a Chemotti sac fly. Cortland pushed its lead to 5-2 in the sixth when Andrew Michalski (Buffalo/St. Francis) walked with one out, took second on a wild pitch, went to third on a passed ball and scored on an error.

Cortland's four-run eighth featured a Bonacci RBI triple, a Chemotti run-scoring double and, with two outs, a Bruno RBI infield single and a JJ DeLawder (Hyde Park/Franklin D. Roosevelt) pinch-hit RBI double. Those runs proved to be crucial when New Paltz scored five times in the ninth. Xavier Zykoff hit a one-out RBI double and eventually scored on a Tommy Kreider RBI single. Following a walk, a run scored on a wild pitch and Apicella hit a two-run single to bring New Paltz within 9-7 and leading to Lynch entering the game. 
 
Cortland 5, New Paltz
 
New Paltz struck for two runs on three hits in the top of the first but were held scoreless on two hits over the final eight innings. Cortland starter Anthony Fusco (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) gave up two hits, two walks and two runs and struck out one in a third of an inning. James LaBruno (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional) went the next six and a third innings and earned the win. He gave up no runs on two hits and four walks and struck out three. 
 
Shane Van Dam (Cranford, NJ) entered with two on and two out in the seventh and struck out a batter to end the inning with Cortland leading 5-2. He retired the side in order in the eighth and allowed only a leadoff single in the ninth and earned the save. 
 
New Paltz's two-run first began with a Sarni leadoff double, followed two batters later by a Ristano RBI single. After two walks, Alex Oulette singled through the right side to drive in a run. The Hawks, however, left the bases loaded after a flyout to second and a strikeout. 
 
Cortland tied the game in the second when Bruno led off with a triple and Adam Mieczkowski (Vestal) hit a two-run homer to left. The game remained 2-2 until Cortland scored three times in the sixth. Chemotti led off with an infield single and was bunted to second by Dylan Mackenzie (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy). Bruno worked the count to 3-0 before being intentionally walked and Mieczkowski walked to load the bases. Hunter Holliday (Camden) singled through the left side to drive in two runs and break the tie and Zachary Kringdon (Larchmont/Mamaroneck) hit a pinch-hit RBI single to make it 5-2. 
 
Kringdon finished 2-for-2 with an RBI, Mieczkowski was 1-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and two runs, Holliday finished 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBI and Bruno was 1-for-3 with a triple, three walks and two runs. Bonacci bunted for a single in his final at-bat in the bottom of the seventh to extend his hitting streak to 17 games. 
 
Ristano ended 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI for the Hawks. Nick Harvey started and allowed five runs on six hits in five and a third innings. He struck out three and walked four. Mike Ascanio and Shane Linett combined for two and two thirds scoreless innings of relief.
