Ithaca Sweeps St. Lawrence on Monday, 7-6 and 10-3

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College baseball team completed the three-game sweep of St. Lawrence University by winning both ends of a Liberty League doubleheader at Freeman Field on Monday as IC combined for 17 runs and 29 hits in 7-6 and 10-3 victories. The Bombers notched 13 extra base hits in the doubleheader to improve to 13-8 overall and 5-1 in the Liberty League

GAME ONE: Ithaca 7, St. Lawrence 6

Ithaca took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a double down the left field line by Matt Curtis, driving home Mike Nauta from second base. Nauta led off the inning with a walk and stole second to move into scoring position.

IC's lead increased to 3-0 in the bottom of the third as Riley Brawdy led off with a no-doubt solo home run to right field and Ethan Rothstein followed with an RBI single a few batters later to drive home Curtis, who reached on his second double of the game.

The Bombers plated two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to push their advantage out to 5-0. Garrett Callaghan drove in the first run with a double that snuck just inside the first base bag and rolled into the corner as Nauta, who reached on an infield base hit, scored from third. Curtis then blooped a single into centerfield and Callaghan came home.

St. Lawrence got back into the game with three runs on three hits in the top of the fifth inning to make it a 5-3 contest. A triple to center brought home the first run and then an RBI bloop double to right pushed in another run. A passed ball allowed the third run to score.

IC quickly got a run back in the bottom of the fifth on a lead off homer from Ryan Laubscher to left field.

The Saints tied the game, 6-6, in the top of the sixth inning with an RBI double, followed by a two-run single. Those three runs knocked Kyle Lambert, whose final line was 5.2 innings pitched with eight strikeouts.

Ithaca regained the lead, 7-6, in the bottom of the sixth on a no-doubt lead off homer by Louis Fabbo to left field, which ended up being the game-winning hit.

Matt Chase earned the win in relief as he struck out three in 1.1 innings of work.

IC produced 11 hits in the win, including seven for extra bases. Curtis was 3-for-4 with two doubles, while Callaghan was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Fabbo also had two hits in the game, while Nauta stole two bases.

GAME TWO: Ithaca 10, St. Lawrence 3

IC wasted no time building a lead as the Bombers scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Nauta led off with a bunt single and then Fabbo drew a walk to set up an RBI double from Callaghan. Curtis would then drive home Fabbo with a sac fly to right and Brawdy followed with an RBI single to right, bringing in Callaghan.

The Bombers increased their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth on a bases loaded sac fly to left from Fabbo, which brought home Merod.

In the bottom of the fifth, Laubscher started a two-out rally with a double off the left field fence and Merod followed with an RBI base hit to left. Rothstein then drove a double to right-center to score Merod from first base, giving IC a 6-0 advantage.

Ithaca put the game away in the bottom of the sixth as Laubscher cleared the bases with a double to left-center to give IC a 9-0 lead. Callaghan, Curtis and Connor Pedersen all reached base with singles. Another run scored to make it 10-0 as Rothstein drove in Laubscher with a double to center.

St. Lawrence scored three runs in the ninth inning to account for the 10-3 final score.

Garrett Bell earned the win in a masterful performance as he allowed just two hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over 6.0 innings pitched. Dan Kellechan threw the seventh inning and struck out one batter, while John Griffin entered in the eighth and struck out the side. Landon White closed out the game in the ninth.

Ithaca is scheduled to host Alfred State on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
