PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – Despite a three-home run game by graduate student Colin Lombardo, the William Paterson baseball team (13-6, 2-0 NJAC) was edged 10-9 on the road by St. Joseph's Long Island (14-3, 5-2 Skyline) in 11 innings April 4.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Golden Eagles struck first in the opening frame after loading the bases with no outs and plating three runs to grab a 3-0 advantage.
  • William Paterson trimmed the deficit to two (3-1) in the top of the third after Lombardo was hit by a pitch and after advancing to second, scored on an RBI single by senior Steve Yelin.
  • However, the Golden Eagles countered with three runs on four hits in the bottom half of the inning to extend the lead to five (6-1).
  • St. Joseph's L.I. tacked on an additional run in fifth following a leadoff home run.
  • In the sixth, the Pioneers loaded the bases after Yelin walked, graduate student Carson Weis singled and junior Noah Cabassa drew a base on balls. With one out, Yelin came in to score after sophomore Tom Radigan walked to make it a five-run game again (7-2).
  • William Paterson continued to chip into the deficit and in the seventh plated three runs. Lombardo opened the scoring in the frame with a one-out solo home run to left. Junior Jake Lutz and Yelin walked on back-to-back at-bats and both later scored on a two-RBI double by graduate student Dan Carter.
  • Trailing by two (7-5) entering the ninth, graduate student Steven DiGirolamo came in to pinch hit and reached safely on a bunt single to lead off the inning. Lombardo then got to the plate and blasted a game-tying two-run homer to left center.
  • In the 11th inning, Lombardo once again came up with a timely hit and launched his third homer of the day to put the Pioneers ahead by one (8-7). William Paterson added an insurance run in the frame after Yelin singled and later scored on an RBI base hit by Carter.
  • The Golden Eagles responded with three runs in the bottom half of the frame that was capped by a bases-loaded walk to secure the 10-9 victory.
