William Paterson Stumbles at TCNJ, 11-7

EWING, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (13-7, 2-1 NJAC) couldn't hold on to a late lead at The College of New Jersey (11-12, 2-1 NJAC), dropping an 11-7 decision April 7.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Pioneers scored twice during their first at-bat with a single from graduate student second baseman Colin Lombardo, an infield base hit by graduate student first baseman Carson Weis, a run-scoring hit by junior left fielder Noah Cabassa and an RBI-single to left by junior center fielder Jake Lutz.
  • Weis singled in sophomore third baseman Tom Radigan, who opened the top of the second with a walk, for a 3-0 score.
  • A double and single netted the Lions a run during the home half of the second, 3-1.
  • TCNJ added two more in the third thanks to a base hit and home run, tying the game at 3-3.
  • The Lions took a 4-3 advantage in the fifth on two base hits, a walk and a single.
  • WP answered during the top of the sixth inning.  Lombardo was issued a leadoff walk, Weis was hit by a pitch and graduate student right fielder Dan Carter doubled them both in. A Cabassa walk, error and Lutz two-run double pushed the Pioneers ahead by a 7-4 count.
  • A bases-loaded error cut the lead to 7-5 after six frames.
  • TCNJ strung together a walk, single, sacrifice and run-scoring base hit for a 7-6 game in the seventh.
  • The Lions crossed the plate five times during the bottom half of the eighth on two base hits, two walks and two more singles.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Lutz finished 2-for-5 while posting a double and three RBI.
  • Carter went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Weis, Cabassa and graduate student catcher Steve Yelin all had two-hit efforts.
  • Graduate student Matt Lawler gave up 10 hits, five runs (four earned) and two walks, striking out three over 5.1 innings.
  • Senior Dan Castaneda gave up two runs on three hits and two walks with one strikeout during 2.1 innings of work.
  • Freshman Chris Quartuccio was charged with two runs, three hits and one walk. Sophomore Neel Telidevara surrendered two hits and one run in 0.1 inning, posting a walk and strikeout.
