Walk-Off in Extras Keeps Knights from Split at Rochester

More news about: Clarkson

Rochester, NY – Snake bit by an extra-inning, walk-off in game two, the Clarkson University Baseball team came up empty in its three-game series against University of Rochester, dropping Saturday's doubleheader 12-1 and 7-6 to the Yellowjackets at Towers Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 5-14 overall and 4-4 in the Liberty League, while Rochester moved to 15-8 and 7-2. Clarkson has a non-league game scheduled at Plattsburgh on Tuesday and then returns to conference play next weekend at Bard College.

In the opener, the game was close save for a nine-run fourth inning for the Yellowjackets which blew the game open. Rochester led 2-1 through three innings, with the Golden Knights' lone run coming home in the way of Cam Jerrett on an error. However, Rochester opened up with nine in the fourth, including two-run hits from Joseph Rende, Colton Avera, and Jacob Matzat.

Game two was close throughout. The Knights picked up a run in the top of the third when Aiden Kuefner drove in Colby Brouillette, who had led off the inning with a double. Rochester picked up two in the bottom half of the inning on hits from Aaron Whitley and Joseph Rende, only to see Clarkson retake the lead in the top of the fourth. Caleb Doyle doubled home Colby Fox, and Brouillette's sac fly drove home Kent Wilson to put the score at 3-2.

Rochester tied the game with a single from Avera in the bottom of the seventh, but it was the ninth that saw nerve-racking action. Joe Figliolino delivered a two-run homer to center field, driving in pinch-runner Jake Millich, and then the Knights strung three hits together to load the bases on singles from Joe Pagano, Kuefner, and Jerrett. A bases loaded walk by James Mason forced in Clarkson's third run of the inning, making the score 6-3.

Rochester was able to plate three in the bottom of the ninth in response to Clarkson's three-run half, as Rende singled through the right side to put the score at 6-4, and a sac fly from Avera pulled the Yellowjackets within one. John Moses then had an infield single and the sixth run of the game came in for Rochester. Clarkson was unable to put any runners on in the top of the 10th, and the Yellowjackets took advantage as Josh Leadem hit a one-out solo home run to end the game.

Colby Brouillette and James Mason each went 4-for-4 in game two, which included the 100th career hit for Brouillette. Pagano and Kuefner also had two hits for the Knights.
