No. 19 Marietta takes two from Otterbein

MARIETTA, Ohio — Senior Brett Carson drove in Nick Bonnizzio with the winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning giving Marietta College a doubleheader sweep of Otterbein University Tuesday (April 11) evening at Pioneer Park.
 
The Pioneers won game one, 13-5, and then got the 6-5 win in the second game. Marietta improves to 19-8 overall and 5-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Cardinals fall to 18-8 on the season and 4-4 in conference games.
 
Bonnizzio reached on a one-out single to left field in the bottom of the tenth inning. Cole Yeager smacked a single through the left side of the infield moving Bonnizzio into scoring position at second base. Carson lined the first pitch he saw to the wall in the left center scoring Bonnizzio with the winning run.
 
Carson (1-2) also got the win on the mound throwing the final 4.2 innings. He allowed one unearned run on four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Forrest Havanis started and worked 3.0 innings. He gave up one run on six hits. Jacob Rocky threw 1.0 shutout inning and Jared Bees pitched 1.1 innings giving up three runs on four hits.
 
Each team scored one run in the second inning. Marietta plated four runs in the fourth inning for a 5-1 lead. The big blow was a three-run double from Ty Davis.
 
Otterbein scored three in the sixth and then plated an unearned run in the top of the ninth to tie the game, 5-5.
 
Gavin Wolf started on the mound for the Cardinals and pitched 3.2 innings. He was charged with five runs on seven hits. Luke Waler and Sam Sethna combined for 4.3 innings of shutout relief. Braydon McCloskey (0-3) was tagged with the loss giving up one run on three hits in 1.1 innings of work.
 
Davis went 3-for-5 with a double and three runs batted in. Bonnizzio and Matthew Busby each had two hits in the game.
 
Otterbein grabbed the early lead in game one. The Cardinals led 3-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. The Pioneer plated four runs in the fourth taking a 5-3 lead.
 
Austin Amburgey got the fourth inning rally started with a solo home run over the wall in right field. Cole Rieman and Busby singled and both scored on a double from Bonnizzio. Alex Richter drove in Bonnizzio with a single to right.
 
The Cardinals evened the score, 5-5, with two runs in the sixth on a pinch hit, two-run home run off the bat of Will Johnson.
 
Marietta retook the lead in the bottom of the frame. Rieman was hit by a pitch. He stole second and moved around to third when the throw got away at second base. Following a Busby walk, Bonnizzio grounded into a double play allowing Rieman to score.
 
The Pioneers blew the game open with four runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth.
 
Kail Hill (6-1) got the win in relief for the Etta Express. Hill worked 3.2 shutout innings allowing just one hit and striking out four. Trent Valentine started and was charged with two runs in three hits. Zach Marzetz worked 3.1 innings giving up three runs on six hits.
 
Andrew Nemec started on the mound for Otterbein and threw 3.2 innings allowing four runs on seven hits. Six different pitchers toed the rubber for the Cardinals. Jackson Peloquin (4-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up on unearned run on no hits in 1.0 inning of work.
 
Rieman led the Pioneer offense going 3-for-3 with two RBI. Bonnizzio, Davis, Valentine, and Busby each had two hits in the game.
 
Marietta travels to Granville on Thursday (April 13) for a single nonconference game at No. 13 Denison University. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m.
