WAYNE, N.J. – Graduate student Steve Yelin drove in a game-high four runs and broke the William Paterson baseball program record for career RBI in a 12-10 home non-conference loss for the Pioneers (19-10, 7-3 NJAC) against Scranton (17-12, 7-5 Landmark) April 18.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Royals struck first in the opening frame after loading the bases and plating one on a fielder's choice.
  • William Paterson countered immediately and after a leadoff walk by graduate student Colin Lombardo in the bottom of the first, Yelin came up and blasted a two-run home run over the fence in left field to put the Pioneers ahead, 2-1.
  • The Pioneers tacked on one additional run after back-to-back walks and two consecutive hit batsmen in the inning.
  • In the second, William Paterson had runners on the corners after graduate student Steven DiGirolamo walked, stole second and advanced to third on a base hit by Yelin. Graduate student Carson Weis hit a sacrifice fly to right to drive in one before classmate Dan Carter launched a two-run homer to left center to make it a five-run game (6-1).
  • Scranton got one run back in the top of the third, but Weis was plunked with the bases loaded in the bottom half of the frame and the William Paterson lead was back to five (7-2).
  • The Royals pieced together a five-run frame in the fourth on three hits and four walks to even the score at seven apiece.
  • Scranton took the lead in the fifth after scoring a pair of runs to grab a 9-7 lead.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, DiGirolamo led things off with a double to left and came in to score on Yelin's second two-run homer of the afternoon to even the score at 9-9.
  • The score remained tied until the Royals plated three runs on three hits in the seventh to grab a 12-9 advantage.
  • William Paterson trimmed the deficit to two (12-10) in the eighth after loading the bases with two outs before Carter drew a base on balls. However, that would be as close as the Pioneers would get as the Royals earned the road win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Yelin broke the William Paterson career RBI record, passing Paul Bumbaco (1993-96) who held the previous record of 182.

  • He extended his home run streak to five games and now has six homers in his last five outings.
