Kalamazoo Baseball's Ryar Rinehart Collects NCBWA DIII Rookie of the Week Honors

Ryar Rinehart of the Kalamazoo College baseball team has collected National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association DIII Rookie of the Week honors on Wednesday (Apr. 19).

Kalamazoo played seven games this past week with two single games against Hope (Apr. 10 and Apr. 12), a doubleheader at Albion (Apr. 11), and then a three-game series against Calvin (Apr. 14-15). The Hornets went undefeated, defeating the Flying Dutchmen 15-14 and 5-4, taking two games over the Britons 17-2 and 13-6, and sweeping the series against the Knights 14-3, 19-9, and 14-3. 

Rinehart had a massive week at the plate, hitting .593 (16-27) with 16 runs scored and 19 RBI. He had an on-base percentage of .649 by adding six walks, two hit by pitches, and two sacrifice flies to his 16 hits. Over half of Rinehart's hits went for extra bases, as five doubles and four home runs led to a 1.222 slugging percentage. He had five multi-hit games, including a 4-4 game with three doubles, a home run, and six RBI against Albion. 

Rinehart was also named the MIAA Baseball Player of the Week for the first time in his career, as well as SAAC Men's Hornet of the Week because of his performance. In his first collegiate baseball season, Rinehart has a slash line of .402/.486/.805 with 33 hits in 25 games. He leads the team with six home runs and 46 RBI while also being tied for the team lead with 11 doubles and two triples. In addition, he has scored 28 runs, has been walked 15 times, and has stolen three bases. 

The Hornets have finished their season series against Hope on Tuesday (Apr. 18) with a season sweep and will now move on to another three-game series against Alma with a single home game on Friday (Apr. 21) and a road doubleheader on Sunday (Apr. 23).
