Wayne, NJ – The Montclair State baseball team pushed across six runs in the top of the ninth to knock off William Paterson 12-8 Friday afternoon.

Sam Angelo reached base five times for Montclair State (19-9, 6-6 NJAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Starter Nick Desiderio escaped a one-out, first and second jam in the first with a tailormade 6-4-3 double-play, and the Red Hawks took the lead in the second. Reece Malek singled up the middle, bringing in Zach Stearns, who led off with a single.
  • Desiderio loaded the bases in the bottom of the second but notched consecutive strikeouts to end the frame. Montclair doubled their advantage in the third on an RBI single to left-center by Jason Moore.
  • The Pioneers erupted for four runs in the bottom of the third on two hits and extended the lead to 7-2 with three additional tallies in the sixth.
  • Montclair dug into the deficit in the seven, as Ryan McKenna and Sam Angelo led off with consecutive singles. Miles Feaster brought a runner home with a groundout, with Matteo Pasculli bringing Angelo around with a double to left-center. After Moore reached on an error, Stearns lofted a sac fly to left, making it 7-5.
  • The Pioneers netted a run in the seventh before Montclair answered with a marker in the top of the eighth, cutting the margin to 8-6 entering the ninth.
  • Pasculli, Moore, and Stearns hit consecutive singles, and after an out, Anthony Guarino trimmed the deficit in half with a single to right. Down to their final out, Malek belted a ground-rule double to right to tie everything at eight. McKenna gave Montclair their first lead since 2-0 with a two-run single, and Angelo capped the comeback off with a long homerun to centerfield.
  • Staked to the four-run cushion, the Red Hawks summoned Patrick Teehan to finish the game. The righty mowed down all three hitters he faced to close out the victory.
