No. 24 Cortland Splits at Brockport; Beers and Van Dam Combine for One-Hitter in Opener

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Dylan Beers (Woodbury/Monroe-Woodbury) and Shane Van Dam (Cranford, NJ) combined for a one-hit shutout as nationally 24th-ranked Cortland defeated host Brockport, 4-0, in the opening game of a SUNYAC baseball doubleheader. Brockport won the second game, 3-2, to snap Cortland's 18-game winning streak. 
 
Cortland (23-8, 13-1 SUNYAC) and Brockport (21-10, 11-3 SUNYAC) will conclude their three-game series Saturday at Brockport. The start time has been moved up to 10 a.m. due to the weather forecast.
 
Cortland 4, Brockport 0 
 
Beers allowed one hit and one walk and struck out six over six innings to improve to 6-1 on the season. Brockport's lone hit was a Ryan Mansell two-out single in the bottom of the third. Justin Pangburn followed with a walk, but Beers fanned the next batter to end the inning. 
 
The only runners Van Dam allowed were on a hit by pitch in the seventh and a leadoff walk in the ninth, but both of those runners were erased by double plays. Van Dam finished with two strikeouts over his three hitless innings and notched his third save of the season. 
 
Cortland broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the fifth. Chris Bonacci (Syracuse/West Genesee) was hit by a pitch with one out and went to second on a passed ball. Nick Chemotti (Warners/West Genesee) reached on an infield single, and a throwing error on the play allowed Bonacci to score. Chemotti eventually scored on a two-out error. 
 
The Red Dragons added a run in the seventh when Andrew Michalski (Buffalo/St. Francis) singled, went to second on an error, was bunted to third by Bonacci and scored three batters later on Adam Mieczkowski's (Vestal) RBI infield single. Cortland's final run came on a Chemotti bases-loaded walk with two outs in the eighth. 
 
Cortland finished with 11 hits. Michalski went 3-for-4, Chemotti was 2-for-3 with two walks and an RBI, and Bonacci ended 2-for-3. 
 
Brockport 3, Cortland 2 
 
Matthew Colucci earned the win for Brockport in the second contest. He allowed two runs on nine hits with a walk and four strikeouts in seven and a third innings. Anthony Lapine entered with one out and a runner on first in the top of the eighth and retired all five batters he faced for his third save of the spring. 
 
Cortland starter James LaBruno (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional) gave up two runs, one earned, in an inning and two thirds. He allowed three hits and one walk. Bradley Battaglini (West Islip) tossed two and two thirds hitless and scoreless innings with one strikeout and one walk. Zack Zarrilli (Farmingdale) went the final three and two thirds and allowed one hit and one unearned run. He fanned three batters. 
 
Cortland took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Bonacci led off with a double and scored on a one-out Mat Bruno (Rye) single up the middle. Brockport scored twice in the second on a Josh Indek RBI single and an error on a pickoff throw. 
 
The game remained 2-1 until the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Johnny Genau was hit by a pitch and moved to third on an Indek single, with Indek taking second on the throw. Jason Mansell reached on an error that allowed a run to score and give Brockport a 3-1 lead, but Cortland escaped further damage on a diving catch by Mieczkowski in right field. Cortland cut its deficit to 3-2 on a Bruno solo homer with one out in the top of the eighth. 
 
Brockport won despite registering just four hits. Indek was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Ryan Voight and Ryan Mansell each went 1-for-3. Bruno recorded a third of Cortland's nine hits with a 3-for-4 effort and two RBI. Mieczkowski went 2-for-3.
