Iannuzzi Leads Offense for #6 RMC Baseball at EMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Senior Ethan Iannuzzi (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby) had seven hits with a triple, a homer, two walks, two steals, four runs and five RBI as the sixth-ranked Randolph-Macon baseball team swept an ODAC doubleheader at Eastern Mennonite on Sunday afternoon.

How It Happened: Game 1

  • In the top of the first, senior Hunter Cole (Norfolk, Va./Granby) had a leadoff single to center, stole second, went to third on a base hit by Iannuzzi and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead.
  • RMC put up eight in the second. Senior Carter Johnson (Southampton, Va./Southampton) drew a leadoff walk and stole second. Junior Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby) walked, and both scored on a double by sophomore Lincoln Lubsen (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) to make it 3-0. Junior Richie Dudley (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) had a bunt single and stole second before junior Matt Myers (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) walked to load the bases. A walk to Iannuzzi forced in a run and Schmitt delivered a two-run single to raise the lead to 6-0. Sophomore Aaron Lautenschlager (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) delivered an RBI single and Webb added a two-run double to make it 9-0.
  • Lubsen belted a two-run homer in the fourth to extend the lead to 11-0.
  • After the Royals plated two in the fifth, Cole smacked a leadoff homer in the sixth, his eighth of the season. Iannuzzi went deep two batters later, his team-leading 10th, as RMC took a 13-2 lead. EMU added two in the eighth and one in the ninth to make the final 13-5.

  • The Yellow Jackets put up a crooked number in the top of the first. Cole walked, stole second and scored on a double by Myers. Iannuzzi reached third on an error, with Myers scoring on the play. Schmitt doubled to knock in Iannuzzi. Schmitt scored on a sacrifice fly by Johnson to give RMC a 4-0 lead.
  • Iannuzzi had a leadoff single in the third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Lautenschlager to extend the lead to 5-0.
  • RMC had a two-out rally in the fourth. Cole walked, took third on a single by Myers and scored on a base hit by Iannuzzi to make it 6-0. Schmitt walked to load the bases and Lautenschlager was hit by a pitch to bring home Myers as the Yellow Jackets led 7-0.
  • The Yellow Jackets had another two-out rally in the fifth. Dudley singled, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch when Cole walked, and scored on a throwing error when Cole stole second. After a walk to Myers, Iannuzzi singled to plate Cole, making it 9-0.
  • Johnson singled in the sixth and scored on a groundout by senior Logan Smith (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) to extend the lead to 10-0.
  • EMU put up three in the sixth before RMC responded in the eighth. Junior Trey Pridgen (York, Pa./York Suburban) had a leadoff single, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a base hit by Johnson. Webb singled to move Johnson to second and both moved up a base on a wild pitch. Smith walked to load the bases. A Dudley sacrifice fly brought home Johnson and a Cole sacrifice fly drove in Webb to make it 13-3.
  • After the Royals got a run in the eighth, Iannuzzi had a three-run triple to cap a six-run ninth to make the final 19-4.
