STORM LAKE, Iowa (April 23, 2023) - The Buena Vista University baseball team split a double header against Luther College on Sunday afternoon to wrap up the three-game weekend series. BVU dropped the first matchup 6-4 before winning the second in dramatic fashion on a Zack Beekmann walk-off homerun. The split moves the Beavers to 27-6 (18-2 A-R-C) and one win away from clinching the American Rivers Conference regular season title. GAME ONE Luther took control of the game early, jumping out to a 4-0 lead after three innings. The Beavers lineup responded with a rally of its own in the bottom of the fourth, utilizing an RBI double from Beekmann and a Logan Mueller RBI single to knot the game at four. The game remained deadlocked into the seventh when Luther capitalized on a pair of defensive miscues to jump back ahead 6-4. The Beavers looked to rally again, but they were unable to repeat their fourth inning outburst, eventually losing the game 6-4. Dalton Glenn (5-1) was charged with his first loss of the season. Glenn allowed six runs over six innings of work. Logan Lape-Brinkman pitched two scoreless in relief while Nolan Faber added a scoreless inning of his own. The Beavers lineup compiled four runs on seven hits. Evan Taylor led the team with a pair of base knocks. Joel Garcia and Beekmann each recorded doubles. GAME TWO It was clear early in game two that runs were going to come at a premium. BVU's Mason Gehling and Luther's Harry Blum each began the pitching duel with three scoreless innings. Luther jumped ahead in the fourth on a two-run homerun before Logan Mueller struck back for the Beavers with an RBI single in the home half to make it 2-1. The pair of starters continued to deal until the end of seventh when both got pulled with the game still 2-1. The game remained at a standstill heading into the home half of the ninth. Logan Mueller reached base on a hit by pitch to begin the inning. Kyler Corcoran, who was pinch running for Mueller, then stole second to move the tying run in scoring position, but after a failed bunt attempt and a strike out, the Beavers found themselves down to their final out. The next two batters reached on a single and a walk, respectively, to load the bases for reigning player of the year Evan Taylor. The stage was set for some heroics from Taylor, but Luther would end up hitting Taylor to tie the game and force extra innings. Calvin Harris worked a perfect top of the 10th for the Beavers, and then Beekman did not let extras go long as he launched a homerun in the 10th to walk it off for the Beavers with one out. Harris (4-0) earned the winning decision after pitching two hitless innings. Gehling pitched seven strong innings, allowing just two runs on three hits while striking out four. Brayden Polzien pitched a hitless inning in relief. In what was a quiet game offensively, Mueller and Beekmann led the way for the Beavers. The pair each recorded a game-high two hits while recording the Beavers' only extra base hits. With his hit by pitch in game two, Mueller now sits at 36 hit by pitches in his career which moves him into second place all-time in program history. NEXT UP: On Friday, April 28th BVU will look to claim the outright regular season conference title when it begins a three-game weekend series at home against Simpson College with the single nine-inning contest. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
