Cortland Wins Series Opener at Plattsburgh, 10-1

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Adam Mieczkowski (Vestal) went 3-for-5 with a homer, double and five RBI and Dylan Beers (Woodbury/Monroe-Woodbury) allowed one run on five hits over seven innings as Cortland defeated host Plattsburgh, 10-1, in the opening game of a three-game SUNYAC baseball series. 
 
Cortland (24-9, 14-2 SUNYAC) remains in first place in the conference, a game and a half ahead of second-place Brockport (12-3). Plattsburgh is now 12-18 overall and 4-9 in the SUNYAC. Cortland and Plattsburgh conclude their series Friday in Plattsburgh with a noon doubleheader. 
 
Beers, now 7-1 on the year, struck out four batters and walked one. Zack Zarrilli (Farmingdale) pitched a perfect eighth inning with one strikeout. Mikey Wandell (Newark Valley) issued two walks and hit a batter in the ninth, but he induced a double play grounder after the first two batters reached and he struck out the final hitter to end the game. 
 
Plattsburgh starter Sean Malamud gave up eight hits and nine runs, but only one earned run as the Cardinals commited five errors. 
 
Cortland scored in the first on a two-base error, a groundout and a Mat Bruno (Rye) RBI groundout. The Red Dragons extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the third on a Nick Chemotti (Warners/West Genesee) sac fly, an error that plated a run, and a Mieczkowski RBI single. 
 
Plattsburgh scored its run in the bottom of the third on an Adam Wein one-out double and an Alex Kornblau two-out RBI double. Cortland pushed ahead to a 9-1 lead with a five-run fifth that included a Bruno RBI single, a Mieczkowski three-run homer and an error later in the inning. Mieczkowski completed his five-RBI day with a run-scoring double in the ninth. 
 
In addition to Mieczkowski's 3-for-5 day, Bruno went 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs and Chemotti was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Kornblau and Wein each went 2-for-4 for the hosts.
