MANSFIELD, Conn. – The No. 12 Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team pounded 18 hits in a 16-1 first-game victory, but followed by allowing a season-high 17 hits in the nightcap in a 7-6 loss as the Warriors and Roger Williams University split a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at the Eastern Baseball Stadium.

Junior leftfielder Josh Cofrancesco (Southington) reached five times in the opener for Eastern (27-8) with four hits and a hit-by-pitch, scored three runs and drove in two, and junior leadoff hitter Zach Donahue (South Windsor) was a home run shy of the cycle with three hits, drove in three runs and scored two in support of senior righty Nathan Furino (East Haven), who threw 47 of his 67 pitches for strikes over the first five innings for his fourth win in six decisions.

In the second game, Roger Williams (11-20) erased Eastern's early 3-0 lead and later scored the winning run in the top of the ninth when Aidan Hawley singled to open the inning, moved to second on Owen Hibbard's sacrifice bunt and scored on a throwing error while stealing third.

It marked Eastern's second 7-6 loss in less than a week and was the second time in three weeks that the Warriors followed a blowout win in the first game of a doubleheader with a close second-game setback.

Furino spaced two singles while fanning six and walking only one over the first six innings of the first game and the Warriors expanded an early 3-0 lead to a nine-run margin by batting around and scoring six runs in the fourth inning on five hits, with Cofrancesco driving in two runs with a two-out single and Donahue tripling in a run and junior rightfielder Jason Claiborn (Prospect) and junior DH Alejandro Soriano (Hartford) both driving in one apiece with singles.

In the second game, freshman righty Louie Mosca pitched 4 2/3 solid innings in relief, allowing only two earned runs and leaving after Eastern tied the game, 6-6 on one-out singles by Donahue, Claiborn and Cofrancesco and junior first baseman Ryan Parent's (Southington) RBI ground ball.

In the second game, first-year junior transfer Tiernan Lynch (Easton) hit solo home runs from both sides of the plate, making it 3-0 with a leadoff blast in the second inning and cutting the Hawks' lead to 4-3 with a one-out drive in the fourth. Senior All-America catcher Matt Malcom (East Lyme) hit his team-leading 11th home run of the season with two out in the bottom of the first inning of the first game – the 35th of his career which moves him into sole possession of fourth place on the all-time list ahead of Alumni Hall of Fame rightfielder Mark Riemer and two behind Hall of Fame centerfielder Dwight Wildman.

In the doubleheader, Cofrancesco had six hits (two doubles), scored four runs and drove in two; Donahue added four hits, scored five runs and drove in three; and Claiborn and sophomore centerfielder Ray Leonzi (Trumbull) each had three hits. Claiborn drove in three runs and scored one and Leonzi scored three times and drove in a run and extended his hitting streak to 11. Senior third baseman Brent Cosculluela (Miami, FL) extended his on-base streak to ten by reaching on a hit-by-pitch in the first game.
