William Paterson Secures NJAC Tournament Bid with 4-2 Victory against Ramapo

WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (23-13, 10-6 NJAC) secured a spot in the upcoming New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Baseball Tournament with a 4-2 Senior Day victory against visiting Ramapo (20-16, 7-9 NJAC) April 28.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Pioneers seized a 2-0 first-inning lead with a single up the middle by graduate student catcher Steve Yelin, a groundout by graduate student first baseman Carson Weis, an intentional walk issued to graduate student right fielder Dan Carter, a hit by pitch for junior center fielder Jake Lutz and a two-run single to left by sophomore shortstop Tyler Ruban.
  • WP made it a 3-0 game in the third when Weis was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a Carter groundout and scored when Ruban singled to center.
  • Three singles and a sacrifice netted the Roadrunners two runs in the seventh, making it a 3-2 game.
  • Junior left fielder Noah Cabassa was hit by a pitch and sophomore designated hitter Austin Jack doubled to left-center field, pushing William Paterson ahead by a 4-2 count after eight innings.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Ruban finished 2-forr-4 with three RBI, and Yelin was 2-for-4 while scoring a run.
  • Graduate student Matt Lawler struck out five hitters during his 8.0 innings of action, scattering two runs, eight hits and a pair of walks (5-2).
  • Senior Dan Castaneda picked up his fifth save with a scoreless ninth, allowing one hit.
  • After the game, WP honored its eight seniors – David Backo, Carter, Steven DiGirolamo, Lawler, Colin Lombardo, Weis, Riley Weis and Yelin.

 

UP NEXT:

  • Due to forecasted rain, William Paterson's final regular-season doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, April 29, at New Jersey City will instead be played Sunday, April 30, at WP at 9:30 a.m.
