Cortland Sweeps Moravian to Conclude Regular Season

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Dylan Beers (Woodbury/Monroe-Woodbury) pitched six no-hit innings in the opener and Cortland combined for 28 runs on 36 hits over the doubleheader as the Red Dragons closed out the regular season with a 12-0, 16-4 non-league sweep of visiting Moravian University in the first-ever meetings between the schools. 
 
Cortland increased its record to 29-9 and will be the host and top seed for the four-team, double-elimination SUNYAC postseason tournament Thursday through either Saturday or Sunday. Cortland will open versus fourth-seeded Oswego at noon, followed by second seed Brockport and third seed Oneonta at 3:30 p.m. 
 
Cortland 12, Moravian 0 
 
Beers struck out six and walked one over his six hitless innings to improve to 8-1 on the year. Moravian recorded its only hit of the game when Chris Pow singled through the left side with one out in the top of the seventh off Red Dragon reliever Bradley Battaglini (West Islip). That's all Battaglini allowed, followed by two strikeouts by Bryan Bernard (Howell, NJ) in a perfect eighth and a 1-2-3 ninth by Liam Krasney (Earlton/Greenville). 
 
Cortland finished with 20 hits, led by Adam Mieczkowski (Vestal) who went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI. Mat Bruno (Rye) homered and drove in four runs, Nick Chemotti (Warners/West Genesee) was 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and three runs, and Mitchell Kelly (Webster/Webster Thomas), Zachary Kringdon (Larchmont/Mamaroneck) and Chris Bonacci (Syracuse/West Genesee) each registered two hits. 
 
Bruno hit a sac fly and Dylan Mackenzie (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) doubled in a run during a two-run first inning. Bruno's three-run homer in the second made it 5-0 and Andrew Michalski (Buffalo/St. Francis) plated a run with a sac fly in the third. Cortland added four in the sixth on Chemotti's RBI single and a Mieczkowski three-run homer, and the Red Dragons' final two runs came on a Connor Lynch (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) RBI single and a Dylan Tierney (East Greenbush/Columbia) RBI fielder's choice in the eighth. 
 
Moravian starter Kenny Kunzman allowed eight hits and six runs, five earned, in four innings. 
 
Cortland 16, Moravian 4 
 
After Shane Van Dam (Cranford, NJ) tossed a scoreless first inning with two strikeouts, Anthony Fusco (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) went the next four innings and was awarded the win as Cortland's most effective reliever. He allowed three hits and no walks and struck out five with no runs allowed. 
 
Mackenzie hit a grand slam in a six-run fifth inning and finished 2-for-3 with a homer, double, walk, five RBI and three runs scored. Mieczkowski homered for the second straight game to extend his team lead in the category to 11. He was 2-for-4 with four RBI and three runs.

Chemotti ended 2-for-3 with a double, walk and three runs, Bruno went 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI, Michalski finished 2-for-3 and Tierney was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Cortland finished the game with 16 hits. 
 
Paul Croyle was 3-for-4 and James Ruban III homered and finished 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Greyhounds (14-26), who are coached by former Cortland assistant Douglas Coe. Derek Holmes went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Matt Madigan finished 2-for-5. Moravian starter David Ciaccio gave up 10 hits and 10 runs in four innings. 
 
Mieczkowski got things started with a three-run homer in the first, and the Red Dragons' four-run third included Mieczkowski's RBI fielder's choice, a Tierney two-run single and a Kameron Hartenstein (Meriden, CT/Maloney) sac fly. The lead grew to 10-0 in the fourth after a Mackenzie RBI double and Matthew Krafft (Cornwall) two-run single, and the Red Dragons' advantage was pushed to 16-0 in the fifth on a Bruno's bases-loaded walk, Mackenzie's grand slam and another Hartenstein sac fly. 
 
Moravian pushed across two runs in the sixth on a Holmes RBI double and Pow RBI single. Ruban hit a two-run homer in the seventh.
