CORTLAND, N.Y. - Brockport scored twice in the top of the ninth to tie the game and three times in the top of the 10th and the second-seeded Golden Eagles defeated top-seeded and nationally 25th-ranked Cortland, 12-9, in the championship game of the SUNYAC baseball tournament at Wallace Field.

Brockport (28-16) earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament while winning its first league title since 2010. Cortland (32-11), the league champion each of the past two years, is a strong candidate for an at-large berth into the NCAA tournament. The NCAA tournament field will be announced on Monday, May 15, at noon at NCAA.com.

Cortland took a 9-7 lead with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Andrew Michalski (Buffalo/St. Francis) walked with one out and Chris Bonacci (Syracuse/West Genesee) singled. Pinch hitter AJ Fenton (Fort Salonga/Kings Park), in his first at-bat of the tournament, doubled to drive home the tying run and, after an intentional walk to Mat Bruno (Rye), Cortland went ahead on an Adam Mieczkowski (Vestal) RBI single up the middle. Two batters later Matthew Krafft (Cornwall) was hit by a pitch to force in a run.

Brockport's tying rally started with a one-out Ryan Mansell single and a Ryan Voight double to put runners on second and third. Justin Pangburn grounded out to second to drive in a run to cut the Cortland lead to 9-8. Josh Indek walked to keep the inning alive and pinch hitter Brian Tietjen, in his first plate appearance of the tournament, hit a single up the middle to drive in pinch runner Frank Vanzillotta with the tying run.

In the top of the 10th for the Golden Eagles, Nicholas Pastore led off with a triple and Zach Eldred was intentionally walked. Patrick Bigham hit a sac fly to center to drive home the go-ahead run, and three batters later Pangburn hit a two-run single with the bases loaded to push Brockport's lead to three runs. Cortland got the potential tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 10th after a Bruno leadoff single and a Krafft two-out walk, but a fielder's choice force out ended the game.

Cortland took a 2-0 lead in the first on a Mieczkowski RBI single and a two-out error. Brockport tied the game in the third on Eldred's RBI triple and Bigham's RBI single, but Cortland answered with two in the bottom of the third on a Bruno two-run homer.

Brockport posted three runs in the fourth on a Johnny Genau RBI squeeze bunt, a David Belsito RBI single and a Bigham RBI groundout, and the Golden Eagles' lead grew to 7-4 in the fifth on a Genau RBI bunt single and a Belsito run-scoring sac bunt. Cortland got two of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth. Bruno led off with his second homer of the game. Mieczkowski walked, and with one out Krafft singled up the middle. The throw to third from center field sailed high, allowing Mieczkowski to score.

The teams combined for 31 hits - Brockport with 17 and Cortland with 14 - along with 13 walks as a total of 13 pitchers were used between the squads. For Cortland, Bruno was 4-for-5 with two homers, three RBI and three runs, Bonacci went 2-for-4 with two runs and Mieczkowski went 2-for-5 with a walk, two RBI and two runs. Michalski was 1-for-3 with two walks. Pangburn was 3-for-4 with a walk, three RBI and two runs to lead Brockport. Bigham, Belsito, Pastore, Eldred and Voight each registered two hits. Bigham drove in three runs and Belsito had two RBI and two runs. Eldred finished with two walks, an RBI and two runs in addition to his two hits.

Cooper Meldrim, Brockport's fourth reliever, earned the win after tossing two and a two thirds scoreless innings. He gave up two hits and a walk and fanned three. Of Cortland's eight pitchers, Grant Biederman (Huntington Station/Walt Whitman) and Mikey Wandell (Newark Valley) were the most effective. Biederman allowed no runs on three hits with one strikeout over two innings and Wandell retired all three batters he faced after entering with one in the seventh. Tommy Lynch (West Seneca/Canisius) took the loss after being charged with Brockport's three runs in the 10th.

Cortland placed four on the SUNYAC all-tournament team: Bruno, Bonacci, Michalski and Anthony Fusco (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown). Eldred was named the tournament MVP and was one of five Brockport players on the all-tournament team along with Bigham, Pangburn, Belsito and Andrew Huffman. Oswego's Jelani Hamer and Jacob Levine rounded out the all-tournament team selections.
