No. 12 Baseball Holds Off Spalding (Ky.) in the First Day of the NCAA Regional Tournament

GRANVILLE, Ohio – The No. 12 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team holds off Spalding (Ky.) University in the first round of the NCAA Regional Tournament. The Yellow Jackets picked up a 4-3 on the Big Red Baseball Field at Denison University.

BW (32-10) was led at the plate by senior All-American infielder Luke Vonderhaar (New Breman) who went 1-for-4 at the plate with a solo home run in the bottom of the first. On the mound, senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference right-handed pitcher Garrett Miller (McMurray, Pa.) who went eight innings allowing two runs on six hits and three strikeouts.

Scoring Plays

  • Vonderhaar got the action started with a solo home run off the scoreboard in left field in the bottom of the first.
  • The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 2-0 in the second lead with an RBI double from senior outfielder Andrew Parker (Toledo/Central Catholic).
  • Freshman infielder Matt Terzola (Uniontown/Archbishop Hoban) drove home Parker with a line drive over the second baseman's head.
  • Spalding (34-11) got on the board in the top of the fourth with a two-run home run from senior infielder Nicholas Salas.
  • BW grabbed an insurance run in the bottom of the eight with a two-out RBI double from senior All-OAC first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School).
  • The Golden Eagles got a run in the bottom of the ninth with two outs off an RBI double from Michael Speck.

On the Mound

  • Miller picked up the start and went eight innings allowing just two runs off a home run. He allowed six hits and a walk while striking out three batters and forcing three double plays.
  • Senior All-OAC right-handed pitcher Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind.) closed out the final inning and picked up a save. He allowed one run on two hits with a strikeout.

The Yellow Jackets advance to the winner's bracket in the NCAA Regional Tournament and will take on host school Denison University. BW and Denison will square off at 2:30 p.m. on the Big Red Baseball Field.
