No. 12 Baseball Uses Late Surge to Down Top Seeded Denison

GRANVILLE, Ohio – The No.9 nationally ranked and second seeded Baldwin Wallace University baseball team scored eight runs in the final two innings to down No. 9 nationally-ranked and top-seeded Denison university by a final score of 10-6 on the Big Red Baseball Field.

BW (33-10) was led at the plate by junior infielder Nick Clark (Willowick/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) who went 3-for-4 at the dish with two runs scored and one run batted in (RBI). Senior All-OAC first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont) and senior outfielder Andrew Parker (Toledo/Toledo Central Catholic) each added a two-run single. On the mound, senior left-handed pitcher Nik Baldis (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) went seven and two-thirds innings allowing three runs on four hits and three walks.

Scoring Plays

  • The Yellow Jackets on the board first in the fifth inning with Clark scoring on a throwing error by the catcher as he attempted to steal third.
  • Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference outfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate) knocked in a run with a single to the shortstop to make it a 2-0 BW lead in the fifth.
  • Senior infielder Josh Bohn got Denison (35-9) on the board with an RBI fielder's choice in the bottom half of the seventh inning.
  • A two-run single from senior All-OAC first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School) made it a 4-1 game in the top of the eighth.
  • Clark picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice as senior All-OAC utility Ryan Guggenheim (Solon) slid under the catcher's tag to make it a 5-1 game.
  • The Big Red scored three in the eighth off a bases clearing double from senior infielder/catcher Ari Fierer and cut the Yellow Jackets lead to 5-4.
  • BW gained an insurance run in the top half of the ninth as Capolupo scored on a wild pitch.
  • Senior catcher DJ Doria (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) got an RBI on a sacrifice bunt as sophomore infielder Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) slid under the catcher's tag.
  • Parker drove in two runs with a single between first and second to make it a 9-4 game.
  • Clark scored his second run of the game on an error by the second baseman on a steal attempt to make it a 10-4 lead after the top of the ninth.
  • An RBI single from freshman infielder Cade Nowik cut into Yellow Jackets lead and made it a 10-5 game.
  • Denison got another their second run of the ninth on an RBI single off the bat of junior first baseman Noah Leib.

On the Mound

  • Baldis picked up the start and went deep into the game with seven and two-third innings pitched. He held Denison hitless until seventh inning and allowed three runs on four hits. He fanned four batters in the outing.
  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Seve Cantini (Roaming Shores/Jefferson Area) faced two batters allowing a run on a hit and a walk.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Garret Miller (Medina) faced one batter in relief and issued a walk.
  • Senior All-OAC right-handed pitcher Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind.) went one and third innings relief allowing two unearned runs on hits. He struck out one batter.
