No. 12 Baseball Takes Down Aurora (Ill.) in the First Game of Super Regional

AURORA, Ill. – The No. 12 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team took down No. 5 nationally ranked and NCAA Super Regional host Aurora (Ill.) University in the first game of the Super Regional best of three series. The Yellow Jackets picked up a 6-5 victory on the Jim Schmid Field at the Stuart Sports Complex.

BW (35-10) was led by senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School) who went 2-for-4 with a go-ahead two run single in the eighth. Senior All-OAC right-handed pitcher Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind.) picked up his sixth win of the season after going allowing one hit over four innings.

Scoring Plays

  • Aurora (42-5) got on the board in the top of the fourth with an RBI single from Tyler Patton.
  • The Spartans added two runs in the fifth in a home run to left field from senior All-American first baseman Justin Satori.
  • The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a pinch hit RBI single from senior catcher DJ Doria (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier).
  • Sophomore All-OAC infielder Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) tied things up with a two-run single to left center.
  • Aurora regained the lead in the sixth with a two-run single from Spencer Ruch.
  • Senior All-American Luke Vonderhaar (New Breman) cut the deficit to one with an\ two out RBI double in the eighth.
  • Castillo gave BW its first lead of the game with two out two-run double down the right field line.

On the Mound

  • Senior All-OAC right-handed pitcher Garrett Miller (McMurray, Pa.) picked up the start and went five innings. He allowed five runs on. Nine hits with three striekouts.
  • Gabe came into relief throwing five scoreless innings. Over the five innings, he allowed one hit and three walks while striking out five.

The Yellow Jackets return to the diamond on Saturday, May 27th for day two of the NCAA Super Regionals. Game two of the Super Regionals will begin at 12:00 p.m. and an if necessary game three would begin 45 minutes after the conclusion of game two. Aurora will be the home team in the first game of the day with a coin flip to determine the home and away teams of the if necessary game three.
