No. 12 BW Baseball Advances to Winner’s Bracket with Victory over Endicott (Mass.)

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The No. 12 nationally-ranked and fifth-seeded Baldwin Wallace University baseball team advances to the winner's bracket of the NCAA Division III World Series with 13-9 victory over No. 4 nationally-ranked and fourth-seeded Endicott (Mass.) College on the Perfect Game Field at Veteran's Memorial Park.

BW (37-10) was led at the plate by senior outfielder Andrew Parker (Toledo/Toledo Central Catholic) who went 2-for-5 at the plate with home run, a run scored and four runs batted in (RBIs). Senior All-American infielder Luke Vonderhaar (New Bremen) went 3-for-6 at the dish with a home run, double, three runs scored and two RBIs. With today's victory, the 2023 Yellow Jackets have tied the program record for wins in a season with 37 on the year.

Scoring Plays

  • The Yellow Jackets got on the board first in top half of the first inning with an RBI single coming from junior infielder Nick Clark (Willowick/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin).
  • Endicott (45-8) tied things up in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single from sophomore infielder Danny MacDougall.
  • BW regained the lead in the second with an RBI single to center from Parker.
  • The Yellow Jackets extended their lead in the third inning with an RBI single from senior All-American first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School).
  • Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference catcher JT Mazula (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) got credited with an RBI after being hit by a pitch.
  • The Gulls got two back in the bottom half of the third with an RBI single from senior outfielder Caleb Shpur and a sac fly from junior outfielder Nicolas Notarangelo to make it a 4-3 game.
  • Vonderhaar started the scoring in the fourth with a two-run home run to left field.
  • Senior All-OAC utility Ryan Guggenheim (Solon) picked up an RBI single to left field.
  • Parker hit the second of run of the inning for BW. He went deep to left for a three-run homer.
  • Senior All-OAC outfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate) drove in a run with a double down the left field line.
  • Sophomore All-OAC infielder Sean Kolenich (Parma/Saint Edward) made it a 12-3 game after four innings with an RBI double to center.
  • Castillo extended the Yellow Jackets lead in the seventh with an RBI single to right center.
  • Endicott got back on the board in the eighth, starting with an RBI single from MacDougall.
  • Sophomore infielder Robbie Wladowski also hit an RBI single in the next at-bat.
  • The final run of the eight for the Gulls came off an RBI single from Dylan Pacheco and made it a 13-6 game.
  • Endicott added three more in the ninth with a three-run home run coming from MacDougall.

On the Mound

  • Senior All-OAC right-handed pitcher Garrett Miller (McMurray, Pa.) picked up the start going seven and a one-third innings. He allowed six runs, five earned, on eight hits. He struck out five in the outing. Miller went out to pick up the win and has now set the program record for wins in a season with a 10-0 record on the year.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Matt Sabin (Mentor) came into relief for the final inning and a third. He allowed three runs on four hits.

BW is back in action on Saturday, June 3rd when it takes on John Hopkins (Md.) University in the second round of the NCAA Division III World Series. The game will take place at 2:15 on the Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Park.
