No. 12 BW Baseball’s Historic Season Comes to a Close in Final Four of College World Series

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The No. 12 nationally-ranked and fifth-seeded Baldwin Wallace University baseball team historic 2023 came to a close at the NCAA Division III College World Series with an 8-2 loss to No. 1 nationally ranked and top-seeded Johns Hopkins on the PG Cares Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The 2023 season featured a historic NCAA College World Series run as they made their first final four appearance in program record. The Yellow Jackets broke multiple team records including having the highest winning percentage, most games won and the most Ohio Athletic Conference wins in program history. The team featured a win over the top ranked team, a catch of the year candidate, the first outright Ohio Athletic Conference Regular Season Title since 1988, consecutive World Series appearances and so much more. The group led by 19 seniors leaves a lasting legacy and many more memories.

Scoring Plays

  • Johns Hopkins (46-6) got on the board first in the top of the first with an RBI single.
  • The Blue Jays added another run in the third off a wild pitch.
  • Senior All-American infielder Luke Vonderhaar (New Bremen) got the Yellow Jackets on the board in the bottom half of the third with an RBI single to make it a 2-1 game.
  • Johns Hopkins got back on the board in the fifth with an RBI single.
  • The Blue Jays added two more in the sixth with an RBI double.
  • Johns Hopkins added three in the eighth.
  • Senior All-American first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School) brought home the last run of the game with an RBI single to first.

On the Mound

  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Seve Cantini (Roaming Shores/Jefferson Area) picked up the start and pitched two innings allowing a run on three hits.
  • Senior All-OAC left-handed pitcher Nik Baldis (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) came into relief going three and a third innings allowing four runs on five hits and striking out a pair.
  • Senior All-OAC right-handed pitcher Garrett Miller (McMurray, Pa.) pitched two-thirds of an inning allowing a walk and striking out a batter.
  • Senior All-OAC right-handed pitcher Dawson Gabe (Lawrence, Ind.) closed out the final three innings allowing three runs on three hits and striking out four.

BW finishes the season with a 39-12 record and a 15-3 mark in the OAC.
