Gators take two from Highlanders

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny baseball team swept Houghton in a pair of nonconference games Thursday (April 6), taking game one 12-1 and game two 4-2.
 
Game One – Allegheny 12, Houghton 1
 
The Gators got to work right away as Tyson Bryant-Dawson (Oakland, Calif./Manvel (Texas)) led off the bottom of the first with his fourth home run of the season. The home run sparked a seven run inning for the Gators. Matt Jennings (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) had a RBI fielder's choice which scored Ryan Dougherty (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny). Sullivan Schueltz (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) scored on a two-out error to make it 3-0. A Chase Chodkowski (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca West) single scored Jennings before a walk to Alejandro Samayoa (Katonah, N.Y./John Jay Cross River) loaded the bases for Bryant-Dawson. Bryant-Dawson tallied two more RBI as a hit to right field scored both Antonio Rios (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) and Chodkowski. Samayoa would take home on a double steal as the Gators led 7-0 after one inning.
 
In the third, the Gators added two more runs. Dougherty drove Chodkowski in before Samayoa scored on a wild pitch, moving the lead to 9-1.
 
The Highlanders would get on the board in the fourth, scoring one run on two hits. The Gators made up the run in the fifth when Scheultz brought Samayoa home on a single. They would add two more runs in the sixth when a Bryant-Dawson double scored both Andrew Stablewski (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Academy) and Jennings, making it 12-1.
 
Brent Herrmann (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) pitched the first six innings, allowing  just one run on four hits while striking out three.
 
Jacob Slater (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) came in to pitch the final inning of action, striking out two while not allowing a base runner, sealing the victory.
 
Inside the Box

  • Bryant-Dawson went three-for-three with a career-high five RBI on a home run and a double with a walk.
  • Schueltz also had a three hit performance with a RBI.
  • Samayoa had a pair of hits while crossing the plate three times.
  • Chodkowski and Jennings both scored a pair of runs.
  • Herrmann earned the win, going 6.0 innings and allowing just one run and four hits while striking out three.
  • Slater struck out a pair of batters in the final inning.

Game Two – Allegheny 4, Houghton 2
 
The Highlanders got on the board first in game two, scoring one run on two hits in the opening inning.
 
Allegheny made up the run in the bottom of the frame. Schueltz hit a two-out single then stole second. Jennings followed up with a double to deep center, scoring Schueltz and tying the game at one run apiece.
 
The score would remain knotted at one until the top of the sixth when the Highlanders utilized three hits in the frame to plate a run and take a 2-1 lead.
 
The Gators made up that run and more in the bottom of the frame. Schueltz was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before Jennings hit an infield single. On a wild play, Brady Nolin (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) reached first on a bunt while a series of errors allowed both base runners to reach safely, putting the Gators back in front 3-2. Stablewski and Brenden Gray (Pittsburgh, Pa./South Park) hit back-to-back doubles as Stablewski's run made it 4-2.
 
In 6.0 innings, Mark Schweickert (Glenn Allen, Va./John Randolph Tucker) allowed just five hits and two runs while striking out eight batters.
 
Daniel Morgano (Allison Park, Pa./Vincentian Academy) entered in the sixth for the save, sealing the win for the Gators.
 
Inside the Box

  • Stablewski went three-for-three with a double and a run scored. 
  • Jennings had a multi-hit game with a RBI.
  • Schueltz scored a pair of runs.
  • Gray drove in a run on a double.
  • Eight different Gators registered a hit.
  • Schweickert picked up the win, going 6.0 innings while allowing five hits and two runs while striking out eight.

News and Notes

  • The sweep moves the Gators to 9-10 on the season.
  • Allegheny is now 3-1 all-time against Houghton.
  • Herrmann moved to 2-0 on the year while Schweickert moved to 2-2. It was Morgano's first save.
