HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. — The Keuka College Baseball team was swept in a doubleheader at Centenary University in New Jersey on Sunday.
Keuka College (0-4) lost the initial nine-inning game 13-10. The Cyclones then defeated the Wolves 6-5 in the seven-inning nightcap.
Centenary University 13 vs. Keuka College 10 – Game One
The Wolves brought the power to stake an early lead in game one. With two outs in the first, Carlos Fantauzzi (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Canandaigua Academy) singled and RJ Murphy (Syracuse, N.Y. / West Genesee) walked. They both scored on a three-run home run by Kole Schmerder (Vestal, N.Y. / Vestal).
In the second, Brady Booher (Rochester, N.Y. / Eastridge) led off with a double and scored on a triple by Alex Evans (Liverpool, N.Y. / Liverpool). Kyle Wood (Newark, N.Y. / Newark) then followed Evans with a double to score him and give Keuka a 5-0 lead.
Centenary got four runs back in the bottom of the second on just one hit. The Wolves would get a run back on an RBI single by Kyle Wood and later get an RBI single by Brady Booher in the sixth.
The Wolves carried a 9-6 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning, but the Cyclones scored seven runs in the inning to take a 13-9 lead. The Wolves got one back in the top of the ninth as Booher tripled and Donald Nemeth (Guilderland, N.Y. / Guilderland) doubled. The Wolves brought the tying run to the plate, but would be unable to plate the runners as Keuka fell in game one.
Lead Wolves: Kyle Wood and Alex Evans each posed four-hit games for the Wolves in the opener. Wood had a double, three singles, and two runs scored. Evans had a triple, three singles, two runs scored, and one batted in.
Centenary University 6 vs. Keuka College 5 – Game Two
Kyle Wood again got the offense going for the Wolves as he led off the game with a double and later scored on an error for the 1-0 lead. Centenary got two in the second to take the lead, but the Wolves answered right back with a Carlos Fantauzzi sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2.
The score remained tied until Centenary scored two in the fifth and one in the sixth to give the Cyclones a 5-2 lead going into the final inning.
The first three batters reached base for the Wolves with a Derek Novicki (North Haven, Conn. / North Haven) walk and singles by Donald Nemeth and Mike Dutch (Manlius, N.Y. / Fayetteville-Manlius). Kyle Wood plated Novicki on a sacrifice fly. Then with two outs, Matt Vaccaro (Fayetteville, N.Y. / Fayetteville-Manlius) singled to score both Dutch and Nemeth to tie the game.
Centenary would load the bases in the bottom of the inning and get the walkoff single for the 6-5 victory.
Lead Wolf: Matt Vaccaro led the Keuka College offense in game two. He had a pair of singles and a triple. The senior drove in two runs and scored one himself.
Up Next for Keuka College: The Green and Gold continue their early season schedule next weekend with four games against SUNY Poly. The first two games on Saturday will be played at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse. The Sunday doubleheader will be at Gutchess Lumber Athletic Complex in Cortlandville.
