Baseball Moves to 8-0 After Twin-Bill Sweep of Greyhounds

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Behind stout offense and shutdown pitching, Marymount baseball continues to stay on fire, as they improve their overall record to 8-0 after a doubleheader sweep of Moravian in their opening play of the RussMatt Invitational. 

GAME ONE - Marymount 7, Moravian 1

  • David Muirhead improved to 2-0 on the season after putting up another strong outing on the mound. Going 6.0 innings, the junior righty allowed no earned runs while striking out three. He allowed just three total hits and improved his ERA to 1.02 after 17.2 innings pitched thus far this season. 
  • Trailing 1-0 heading into the top of the third, the Saints broke through. After back-to-back singles from Bobby Letizel and Ryan Cuadros to open the frame, Andrew Schaeb put pressure on the Greyhound defense, dropping a successful bunt and causing Moravian to throw it away, scoring Leitzel from second.
  • The Saints tacked on another in the top of the third with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kevin Knoess, scoring Cuadros
  • Marymount added a pair in the top of the fourth with an RBI walk from Leitzel and a sacrifice fly from Cuadros
  • Jay Beavers put down a perfect bunt in the top of the fifth to score Alec Reilly, who opened the frame with a walk. 
  • Daniel Fernandez led off the top of the sixth with a single to start another scoring frame. An RBI single from Schaeb and an RBI from Reilly pushed the score to 7-1.
  • A scoreless inning of relief from Nick Trapanese closed out the game, moving the Saints to 7-0 after game one. 
  • Leitzel went a perfect 2-2 in the opening game with two runs scored and an RBI out of the leadoff spot. 
  • Reilly went 1-for-2 with an RBI. 
  • Schaeb, Beavers, Cuadros, and Knoess each notched an RBI in the contest. 
  • Fernandez collected a pair of hits. 
  • Chad Singleton knocked a sharp single in the game. 

GAME TWO - Marymount 13, Moravian 0

  • MU dominated game two of the day behind Braeden Lencz earning his third win of the season in as many starts. Striking out seven, the sophomore allowed no earned runs on just two hits in 6.0 innings of work. He's improved his ERA to 2.08 after 17.1 innings pitched on the year. 
  • Reilly got the Saints on the board first, driving in Leitzel who led off the frame with a walk. 
  • After a Jonanthan McMath double and a walk from Robert Moffett, Leitzel struck in a big way, punching the ball over the right field fence for a three-run homer to push the lead to four. It was his first home run of the season.
  • Schaeb later singled up the middle to score Cuadros who singled in the prior at-bat and stole second. 
  • The Saints continued to maintain offensive pressure, putting up another four spot in the bottom of the third, highlighted by an RBI double from Moffett and an RBI single from Cuadros. The score now sat at 9-0 in favor of MU.
  • Another four runs in the bottom of the fifth gave the Saints more cushion. Cuadros knocked an RBI single, followed by Jack Kern driving in a run.
  • A two-run double to right center off the bat of Sean Quinn in the first-year's first collegiate at-bat was the highlight in the frame. 
  • Ben Riddick closed out the game with a scoreless inning of relief, striking out one. 
  • Leitzel went 2-for-4 with his three-RBI homer.
  • Cuadros knocked three hits with a pair of RBI and a run scored.
  • McMath went 2-for-2 in the nightcap with a double and a pair of scored runs.
  • Craig Sodano punched a double after pinch hitting earlier in the game.
  • Quincy Via and Joseph Kramp each added a hit.

UP NEXT

  • The Saints will continue their trek in Florida, playing two against Husson tomorrow starting at 4:45 PM.
  • After a day off on Tuesday, they will play Benedictine on Wednesday and Fontbonne on Thursday before traveling home.
