Maryville Sweeps Twin Bill in Home Opener

MARYVILLE – It was worth the wait Saturday afternoon at Scotland Yard, as Maryville took down Allegheny in both ends of the twin bill home opener for the Scots.

Originally scheduled to make their home debut on Friday, inclement weather dictated the Scots and Gators would face off in a doubleheader on Saturday. MC won Game 1 in dominant fashion 11-4 before pulling out a much closer victory in Game 2, 6-5.

Jacob Johnston continued his torrid start to the 2024 season, going 5-for-8 with three RBIs, two runs scored and two walks on the day. He has extended his hitting streak to six games, picking up multiple knocks in five of them.

This season the shortstop is slashing .556/.636/.704, leading the Scots in OPS (1.340), hits (15), RBI (8), and walks (6). He is also tied for the team lead in runs scored with seven, matching Colin DunworthJimmy Meredith, and Christian Carlton.

"Jacob is seeing it really well right now," Maryville head coach Clint Helton said. "His approach is there, and he's locked in because of his approach. If you watch him work every day of the week it makes sense."

Mitchell Grannan continued to dominate on the mound, toeing the rubber in Game 1 and picking up his second win of the season. The righty worked a season-high six innings, allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out a season-high eight batters.

Xavier Resto earned an old-school save in the contest, pitching three innings and striking out two while allowing two runs on three hits and two walks.

"When you've got a guy like Mitch with the ball in his hand, you know you're going to have a chance to win," Helton said. "That's the story of our whole pitching staff. We know they're going to put us in a good position to win."

Maryville's 18 hits are its most this season, and the most since April 12, 2022, when the Scots had 19 knocks in an 11-5 victory over Bob Jones. All nine batters in MC's starting lineup recorded a hit, with 6 picking up multiple in the contest.

The Scots scored first again in Game 2, picking up two runs in the second inning on a pair of Gator errors, before extending their lead to three on an RBI single from AJ Finco. Finco was 3-for-5 on the day with two doubles and an RBI.

Allegheny took its first lead in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs to go ahead 5-4 heading into the stretch.

The Scots were unable to come back in the seventh, but a scoreless eighth inning from Chris Arbuthnot set the table for the Scots to score two and take the lead in the bottom half of the inning.

Max Bowers, who made a bevy of outstanding defensive plays in centerfield, came through on offense in the eighth, putting the Scots ahead 6-5 with a two-RBI single that just dropped in over the shortstop's head in left field.

Chris Arbuthnot

Arbuthnot ran into some trouble in the ninth inning, allowing two runners on the corners with two outs remaining, but was able to work out of the jam and claim the victory for the Scots. Arbuthnot moved to 1-0 on the season, pitching two scoreless innings, allowing two hits, and striking out one.

The Scots go for the sweep Sunday afternoon, taking on Allegheny in one more game at Scotland Yard. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
