Scots Drop Tough Game Against Oglethorpe

ATLANTA – Zach Devries made the most of his second career start for Maryville, hitting two home runs and driving in three but the Scots still fell short, losing to Oglethorpe 7-6 Sunday afternoon at Hermance Stadium in Atlanta.

The transfer from Surry Community College is now 4-for-7 with four RBIs in his first two starts as a Scot, going 2-for-3 against Transylvania Saturday and 2-for-4 against the Stormy Petrels on Sunday.

Devries homered in the fifth and seventh innings. His fifth-inning blast tied up the game at 5-5 while his home run in the seventh cut the Oglethorpe lead in half at 7-6.

The Scots scored first in the game, putting up three runs in the first inning on two hits, two walks, and two hits by pitches. Jacob Johnston picked up right where he left off Saturday afternoon, ripping a leadoff double down the right field line to kick things off for MC

The shortstop finished the contest 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Through five games to start the season, Johnston is 10-for-19 (.524) with a triple, two doubles, five RBIs, five runs scored, and four walks.

Oglethorpe scored in each of the first six innings, scoring one run in every inning except for the second, where the Stormy Petrels scored two. Jonathan Cruz and Brick Conway each homered for Oglethorpe in the game, hitting round-trippers in the first and second innings, respectively.

Grady Cash was finally able to work a clean inning for Maryville, entering in the seventh and working a nearly perfect two innings, save for a leadoff walk to start his outing. Cash made quick work of the Stormy Petrels in the seventh, inducing back-to-back groundouts and a flyout before picking up two strikeouts and a groundout in the eighth.

Maryville outhit Oglethorpe 9-6 and neither team made an error, but the Stormy Petrels kept finding ways to create runs and walked away with a victory on Day 2 of their Invitational.

Maryville returns to action Friday afternoon for the first of three games against Allegheny at Scotland Yard. First pitch in the home opener is scheduled for 4 p.m.
