Brandeis baseball bashes Bantams, 13-8

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Brandeis University baseball team scored three runs in the first inning and went on to add runs in each of their first five at-bats as the Judges picked up their first win of the season, 13-8, over the host Trinity College Bantams today.

TEAM RECORDS

  • Brandeis: 1-2.
  • Trinity: 2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Judges wasted little time getting to Trinity starter Drew McGowan as the first five Judges reached safely on four hits and a walk. The big blow of the frame was a bases-clearing double by grad transfer 1B Eddie Zanor (Branford, Conn./Notre Dame-West Haven) that gave the Judges a 3-0 lead.
  • Brandeis increased their lead to 5-0 in the second on an RBI single by first-year 2B Dylan Walsh (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) and run-scoring grounder by Zanor.
  • The Bantams broke through in the bottom of the frame on some heads-up running by catcher Jack Ryan, who drove in a run with a double and two batters later stole home when a dropped third strike went down to first.
  • Brandeis blew things open in the third with a five-run frame. Sophomore DH Jordan Greenaway (Clifton, N.J. / Morristown Beard School) delivered a sacrifice fly, followed by a two-run double by Walsh.
  • Grad student Brian King (Palos Verde, Calif./Palos Verde) drove in his third run in the last two games with a single, and junior catcher Justin Keeler (Seymour, Conn./St. Joseph's) walked with the bases loaded to give the Judges a 10-2 advantage.
  • A wild pitch and a passed ball helped Brandeis score twice in the fourth, and first-year CF Evan Reif (Olathe, Kans. / Olathe South) drove in a run win a single in the fifth to close out Brandeis's scoring.
  • Trinity scored a run in the third and four in the sixth, but first-year lefty Dimitri Skourides (Arlington, Mass. / Winchendon School) was terrific in relief, keeping the Bantams off the board in the last three frames.
