No. 5 Salisbury Baseball takes down PSU-Harrisburg, 8-6

SALISBURY, Md. – The fifth-ranked Salisbury University baseball team made its third lead of the game stand up, taking down the Penn State Harrisburg Lions, 8-6, on Thursday afternoon at Donnie Williams Sea Gull Baseball Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Sea Gulls broke the ice in the bottom of the second inning. Tim Petrucelli singled to lead off, then Ben Anderson shot an RBI double down the right field line to put SU on the board, 1-0.
  • In the third, Ethan Ruiz led off by reaching second base on a dropped flyball in left. Andrew Kell and Kyle Brex followed with infield singles to load the bases, and Dylan Winebrenner brought Ruiz home with a fielder's choice. Petrucelli followed with an RBI base knock to make it 3-0.
  • The Lions got those three runs back in the fifth. With two on and no out, Lucas Floyd belted a two-run double to right center. After a sac bunt and a groundout, Kevin Lehner singled Floyd home with the tying run that made it 3-3.
  • With two on and one out in the top of the sixth, Drew Bechtold hit a grounder to third, but Dom Frigiola sailed the throw into the outfield to allow a run to score. Floyd then legged out an RBI infield single, building the Lions lead to 5-3.
  • SU counterpunched in the bottom of the sixth. Anderson and Danny Sheeler worked back-to-back walks to lead off, then Adam Tommer loaded the bases with a bunt single. Two batters later, pinch-hitter Alex Craig singled to left to bring home Anderson and get it to 5-4, but Sheeler was thrown out at the plate for the second out.
  • After a balk moved the runners up to second and third, Andrew Kell doubled to left to bring home the tying and go-ahead runs, putting the Sea Gulls back on top 6-5.
  • PSH drew even in the top of the eighth thanks to some heads-up baserunning by Carlos Irizarry, who led off with a walk. Braeden Piotrowski then laid down a sac bunt up the third base line, and Irizarry advanced all the way to third after the bag was uncovered. Irizarry then scored on a wild pitch to tie it up again at 6-6.
  • Salisbury answered and went ahead to stay in the home eighth. Sheeler doubled to lead off and took third on a passed ball. After a flyout, Alex Seidleck walked, and pinch-runner Mickey Haynes stole second. Max Ehrhardt then lashed a single into left to bring Sheeler home, and Kell plated Haynes on a sac fly to build the SU margin to 8-6.
  • Shawn Rosemond slammed the door from there, retiring the side in the ninth and punching out Dallas Hite to put it in the books.
