Harvey, Lautenschlager Lead RMC Baseball to Sweep at Ferrum

FERRUM, Va. – Junior Chaz Harvey (Charlottesville, Va./Miller School) went 5 for 9 with two doubles, a homer, five runs and six RBI, while junior Aaron Lautenschlager (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) was 6 for 9 with three doubles, three walks, four runs and four RBI, as the Randolph-Macon baseball team opened ODAC play with a doubleheader sweep at Ferrum on Sunday afternoon.

How It Happened: Game 1

  • The Panthers plated three in the bottom of the first before the Yellow Jackets put up their own crooked number in the top of the second. Senior Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby) had a leadoff infield single, stole second, moved to third on a base hit by Harvey and scored on a one-out single by sophomore Logan Duff (Forest, Va./Liberty Christian) to make it 3-1. Senior Matt Myers (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) moved both runners up with a sacrifice bunt and a base hit by freshman Jon Quici (Philadelphia, Pa./Conestoga) brought home both to level the score at 3-3. Freshman Zach Wernoski (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) reached on a bunt single before Lautenschlager delivered a two-run double as RMC took a 5-3 advantage.
  • Ferrum made it a one-run game in the bottom of the second before the Yellow Jackets added to their lead in the fifth. Webb had a leadoff double, went to third on a groundout and came home on a single by senior Richie Dudley (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) to make it 6-4. Dudley stole second and third and scored on a throwing error to extend the margin to 7-4.
  • After the Panthers put up one in the bottom of the eighth, RMC responded in the ninth. Webb drew a leadoff walk, went to third on a double by Harvey and scored on a double play to give the visitors an 8-5 edge.
  • Senior Patrick Routsis (Midlothian, Va./St. Christopher's) earned the win in relief, working 4.0 scoreless innings with three hits and one walk to make him 1-0 on the season.
  • Junior Sam Slevin (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank Cox) fanned three over the final two frames to record his third save.

How It Happened: Game 2

  • RMC put up another crooked number in the top of the first in Game 2. Quici had a leadoff single, went to third on an errant pickoff throw to first and scored on a groundout by Wernoski to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead. Lautenschlager had a base hit and went to second on a walk to Harvey. A free pass to Webb loaded the bases before a single by Dudley drove home Lautenschlager and Harvey to give RMC a 3-0 advantage.
  • After the Panthers put up two in the bottom of the first, the Yellow Jackets responded in the second. Sophomore Eli Brooks (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) was hit by a pitch, went to second on a bunt single by Quici and scored on a base hit by Wernoski to make it 4-2. A double by Lautenschlager brought home Quici as the score moved to 5-2. A double by Harvey knocked in Wernoski and Lautenschlager to extend the advantage to 7-2. Havey went to third on a single by Dudley and scored on an error as the lead grew to 8-2. A base hit by sophomore Nathan Chen (South Riding, Va./Freedom) drove in Dudley with a base hit to make it 9-2.
  • Ferrum tallied one run in the second before the Yellow Jackets put up another crooked number in the third. Wernoski was plunked, stole second and scored on a single by Harvey, making it 10-3. Harvey scored on an error for an 11-3 lead.
  • The Panthers plated two in the bottom of the third before the Yellow Jackets scored multiple runs again in the fourth. Senior Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) had a leadoff single, stole second, went to third on a single by Quici and came home on a sacrifice fly by Wernoski to make it 12-5. After a walk to Lautenschlager, Harvey belted a three-run homer, his first of the season, to put RMC on top 15-5.
  • After Ferrum scored one in the fourth, Bush knocked in two with a sacrifice fly in the fifth as the Yellow Jackets led 17-6.
  • The Panthers added two in the fifth before Lautenschlager walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch as the Yellow Jackets went up 18-8.
  • FC bot that one back in the sixth before RMC put up another crooked number in the seventh. Chen doubled and scored on a Bush base hit. Brooks doubled to bring home Bush, and Lautenschlager singled to knock in Brooks as the Yellow Jackets took a 21-9 lead.
  • The Panthers added one in the bottom of the seventh to make the final score 21-10.
