Benedictine Slugs Past No. 23 Webster

The Benedictine University baseball team remained unbeaten to start the season by swinging past #23 Webster 14-5 in Florida.

Webster jumped ahead with a single run in the bottom of the second. Benedictine answered immediately with two runs in the third. The first six batters of the game had been retired before Peter Turelli opened the third with a double. Kevin Bushnell notched a two-run single to put Benedictine ahead.

Webster moved back in front by plating two in the bottom of the fourth and opening a 3-2 edge. The lead was short-lived with Benedictine putting up crooked numbers in three consecutive innings. Logan Gregorio, the preseason All-American who has reached base in 37 consecutive games dating to last season, connected on a three-run homer in the fifth, his first of two in the game. Holding on to a 5-4 edge in the sixth, the team plated three more runs and did not look back.

Gregorio backed up his preseason credentials by finishing with four hits, three for extra bases and six RBIs. Turelli and George Betevis both tallied three hits as Benedictine finished with 15. Nick Kosmetatos upped his record to 2-0 by working five innings. Austin Pizer backed him up with 3.1 and did not allow an earned run while Nick Shelton closed out the win.

Last season Webster defeated Benedictine in February and that win helped Webster earn the final at-large slot from the region over Benedictine, who won 30 games.

Benedictine (8-0) closes the spring break trip with a game at 9am Eastern against Fitchburg State.
