Pitching Impressive For Eastern Conn. in Loss

GREENSBORO, N.C. –  Senior first baseman Ryan Parent (Southington) and senior shortstop Zach Donahue (South Windsor) tied the game in the top of the seventh inning with consecutive extra-base hits but a hit batter, error and two walks set up freshman Skyler Dark's game-winning single with none out in the bottom of the ninth inning as Guilford College edged the Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team, 3-2, Monday afternoon at Edgar H. McBane Field.

In the first meeting between the programs in 46 years, Guilford (6-10) ended a four-game losing streak and sent Eastern (1-5) to its second straight loss and spoiled   solid outings by 6-foot-7 inch sophomore righty starter Dylan Scudder (Simsbury) and junior transfer righty reliever Tyler Rice (Berlin).

Scudder and Rice, the latter in his Eastern debut, combined to pitch the first eight innings, giving up only two runs on four hits with six strikeouts (and four walks).

Trailing 2-1, Eastern tied the game in the seventh on Parent's one-out double to center and Donahue's RBI triple to center, knocking out Guilford junior righty Jacob Phillips. Against freshman lefty Stratton Barwick, the Warriors left the go-ahead run on third when Barwick got a strikeout and induced an inning-ending ground ball.

Parent's first-inning single up the middle plated junior centerfielder Ray Leonzi (Trumbull) with the first run of the game in the first before the Quakers tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a single and moved ahead with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

In his second start of the year, Scudder fanned five and walked two and gave up four hits over the first five innings, leaving on the short end of a 2-1 score. Rice, an Avery Point transfer, shut down the Quakers with three hitless innings, fanning one and walking two before being lifted after the eighth inning in a 2-2 game.

Eastern had seven hits, with Parent the only hitter with more than one. Three Guilford pitchers walked only one, while four Eastern hurlers issued six free passes, hit two batters and threw two wild pitches.
